I've installed, re-installed, updated, etc ... Thunderbird on literally dozens of computers in recent years and this is one of only a couple of add-ons that I automatically install once it's up and running. It fills a very basic need for most business users and it does it extremely well with a great deal if flexibility.

Just wanted to say that I love it too for being the most simple way to import messages from Windows Live Mail!

I've been searching all over for a tool that would backup all my email in a way that was quick and simple. I'm glad to have found that tool.
Some others (including the default Thunderbird) would back them up but the file encoding would be off (Korean characters in particular would be either hex codes or question marks) or use an unhelpful format. Most all were rather complicated.
Not only was this easy to use, but it provided all the options I could have hoped for and then some.
Thanks.

A very valuable add-on.
If, like me, you're having problems importing windows-live-mail emails into thunderbird with this add-on, try this:
Get eml2mbx, a command-line freeware (that means, you write a single command in the windows/dos "command prompt" or in the windows/run)
http://luethje.eu/prog/eml2m_en.htm
Once you have your emails in the eml format, convert them to mbx format, in one batch, including all the folders and subfolders, and after that the add-on will import them into thunderbird (without the nested folder structure, however, but all folders will be there). To import into Thunderbird, create a new folder, click on it, and call the import/export addon from there (it won't work if you haven't clicked into a folder).

I have successfully transfered more than 5000 messages from WLM with a lot of attached files and pictures (2.5 GB). In WLM you must export your mail with option target is WLM in an empty folder. In Thunderbird, first create your account. After import EML files. Be carefull, when you have created several folders in WLM you'll need to rename them. Thank you very much for this tool.

This is a great tool for quickly saving multiple emails as files.
It would be great if it offered more flexibility in file naming (e.g. date format etc.). The company I work for insists that we use a regular convention for naming received emails when saved (e.g. YY.MM.DD - in - <Subject>). Some more flexible variables in file naming would make this indispensable.

Thunderbird won't import the export, which seems like a pretty simple test. Here's the email I sent to the developer for background ((s)he did not reply):
I am having a problem with ImportExportTools for Thunderbird. When I export a bunch of folders, then reimport them into my "Local Folders", it's all messed up. I have a Gmail account with IMAP (many folders which are my Gmail labels; not worried about duplicate copies of messages, space is cheap). I CTRL+click to chose the folders I want to export (all of my label folders) and export them. When I reimport, under local folders, it is not the same. Folders have different unread counts and there are garbled messages with nonsensical dates. Have you ever seen this problem? Am I using your tool wrong? Do you want more information?
Background: I am trying to make a dump of my Gmail. I have setup Thunderbird with Gmail over IMAP and have downloaded everything including attachments. I can disconnect from the network and open messages and attachments. Then, I use ImportExportTools as I described.
ImportExportTools v2.7.0.1

Not for OSX migrations from Eudora 6!
Message body of many imported e-mails becomes invisible. Hours and hours of troubleshooting and re-installs, but the problem was finally solved only by using Eudora Mailbox Cleaner instead. (That's PowerPC code so you're probably out of luck if you're on Lion).
[to the editor: If I could "Use the available support options for each add-on" I would. Where are they?]

Great add on, used with Thunderbird for easy unpacking of .mbox files that were created through webmail app Horde.
Thanks

I particularly like the facility to export index of a folder.... it is helpful in my work to keep track of email correspondences.
I would request Paolo to add one more feature :
When I filter emails on some criteria, than the index of this filtered list should be available to me for export.
Right now, I can only get html version of this list by selecting the emails.
Thanks.

Very well done. Unfortunately, the scheduled backup does not seem to work (on MAC OS X 10.7 "Lion"). Nothing is ever backed up to the location I specified.

Can't handle exporting.
The program routinely crashes when attempting to export files to plain text.
I know this problem, but I can't reproduce it.
Anyway it's related to a core program bug, this one:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=682916
This should be fixed in 2.6.3 version

Very useful addon, I used it to import 23640 emails from windows mail! :)
Succesfully managed to import all emails in eml format without errors, also in subdirectories. Note that I did not import all emails at once, but always one major folder at the time.. in any case my biggest folder (sent items) counts approx 10600 emails! And I did not encounter problems.

I am waiting for a really usable export+import function for years. Originally I expected such a feature in Thunderbird itself but I lost my hope. The Add-On here is far away from being good.
I sorted all my approx. 100000 messages into a folder tree with approx 1500 folders.
Now I want to export them in *.eml format. So that a folder in Thunderbird is represented by a folder in Win7 (Linux). The export should take place in one step (not by having to export each single folder one-by-one).
Unfortunately this important core task is NOT possible with this Import/Export Add-on.
I got no feedback from the author if he is willing to implement this (easy) feature or not.
So I am still waiting for a real usable import/export Add-on

Exactly what I needed to export/import my emails in a new/clean profile, I'm still wondering WHY there isn't a default option for that in TB.
