If you like to not be tracked and keep you browser's history clean so this extension is suitable for you. It's very easy to use, just click the icon on the toolbar and there you got it - a new private tab.

It's already implemented as a browser's option but at least we'll click less

Does what it's supposed to do, cleanly and flawlessly.

Quick question: would there be any possibility of adding an option to make the color of a private tab -- the tab itself, up there in the tab toolbar -- be different from the rest of the tabs? It would be very useful to be able to just glance at the tab toolbar and see if there were any private tabs open.

Edit: thanks for the pointer to the styles! They work like a charm in userChrome.css.

See some example styles for userChrome.css/Stylish here:

(not so good in Firefox 29+ with Australis, but not bad as a start point...)

Small, simple, no restart required and it does what it should. Very good :).

Only one thing: It doesn't work with e10s until now. I can't open links in a new tab or in a new private tab if this add-on is enabled.

Edit: Oh, okay, thanks for that info. I leave the note here if someone else is experiencing the same issue. But as e10s is in development it's still completely worth five stars ;-).

This is known issue about e10s:

great addon, i don't see why browsers don't implement it as a builtin feature (and only have such availability on the window level)

This is exactly what I was in need for, but I need a button or shortcut that is mouse friendly please, like in right click menu on the tabs bar perhaps.

Hmm... there is button for toolbar, just call "Customize…" from toobar context menu.

Oh, needed a lot of code to handle clicks, especially due to upcoming Electrolysis aka e10s:
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Firefox/Multiprocess_Firefox
Anyway, there is API for other extensions that already handle some clicks:

I just installed this add-on and after testing it, I can already tell it'll be my most-used add-on to date. I needed to watch my Amazon orders on two separate accounts, but that would either require logging out and back in to check each account, or to run a private window. Now I can have a tab for each without having to deal with the hassle of either option. Would hug the developer if possible.

So after FF 31, with latest private tab update, i cant get into PRIVATE MODE, so your addon is useless now.

I removed the addon, installed it again, but to no avail.

Firefox default private WINDOW works flawlessly.

This is most likely conflict with some another extension (like https://github.com/Infocatcher/Private_Tab/issues/110 or something similar).

So, please try on new Firefox profile (to ensure, that this is some conflict):

And please also provide information from about:support page.

Running FF 31.0 on OSX 10.9.4 with Private Tab 0.1.7.3

> However with ONLY 1 private tab open (and nothing else), firefox's memory usage really goes high in a ~ 1 hour. I have confirmed that there was no other addon causing this. Is there anything wrong with the addon or ?

Some special site?
I've tried on new empty Firefox profile for private about:newtab page and all works fine.
Also Private Tab doesn't use content-dependent handling, so this may be bug in Firefox itself. And what happens without Private Tab, if used built-in private window? Or even (if this is site-specific) what happens, if used normal tab?
Anyway, please report more details here: https://github.com/Infocatcher/Private_Tab/issues

[Upd] And may be something useful in about:memory page.

> is it possible to have 2 or more INDEPENDENT private tabs open in a single FF window ?

Unfortunately no, Private Tab uses built-in private browsing implementation that adds only one separate "identity" for all private windows and tabs.
