Love this app but the most recent version (2.3.1) is broken :-(

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (2.3.1).

if it is not identical to issue #111, please report what is happening here:https://github.com/opto/nostalgy-xpi/issues.

TB loads suddenly the addons at a time when it is not ready to receive them yet. That is not a problem of Nostalgy but again something broken due to continous changes in TB.
Please don>'t blame Nostalgy with 1 star when in reality, it is caused by TB changes. It happens only on fast computers - mine is slow, so this did not happen here. We are working on a permanent solution, a workaround is given above.

A superb tool , would not want to live without - but 2.3.1 completely broke the whole thing. None of the shortcuts function (s, g, c)... :-(

In Answer to the developer's comment:
No clue why this should be a TB issue:
- Nostalgy 2.2.4 --> works fine
- Nostalgy 2.3.1 --> shortcuts do not work, anymore
- Revert to Nostalgy 2.2.4 --> all fine again.
(regardless of minor TB version differences (78.10.1/78.10.2/78.11.0).

Additional remark:
- Toggling Nostalgy 2.3.1 addon off/on also does get it back to life, but only for as long as TB is running. Next start will require the same actions, again.

Great efforts by developer to fix all the problems with TB 78.11+ changes.

I think this is a TB issue because it is resolved by deactivating the addon and then reactivating the addon. Actually, just replacing WL 1.45 by WL 1.28 (the TB glue code) makes it working again. An interim version is here: https://github.com/opto/nostalgy-xpi/releases/tag/v2.3.2. Only works for 78, for 86 and above, a solution is pending.

In both cases, it is the same addon code. Why should it start working after stopping/starting?
What changed is TB version and some TB supplied glue code. Key setting code was not changed.

TB changed how the accelerators are handled (they now grab the S even in folder tree, where you cannot set star). Therefore, I am using V in my TB, which is available in English TB in German locale - that may be different for you).

In 85, it also helped just to reset to S, then overriding the star.
Also, there is a bug in TB: after addon install, it does not show the wrench symbol for options. I need to close the addon tab and reopen it for the wrench to come up.
Please put further info into the issue linked above. Thanks, Klaus

Upgrade to 2.3.1 automagically appeared on my laptop a couple of days ago, and now this morning on my desktop. Press S, and the "star" next to the current message turns from white to yellow. The functionality of Nostalgy++ is totally broken because I cannot save messages to my folders. It appears that the upgrade is broken.

SO glad to see Nostalgy updated for TB78! This is one of two reasons why I use Thunderbird at all. This is basically the 'power user' tool for email. Thank you opto!
Thanks also for the cc/bcc options in compose (major TB78 interface mistake now corrected!).

Nostalgy is the reason why I use Thunderbird. Full stop. I'm very happy it's back. I'll make a donation right away. Thanks, opto.

This is wonderful. Thank you. The only thing that keeps me using old Thunderbird and old Nostalgy is that Nostalgy remembers the previous folder used, so that I don't have to select it from a list as in Nostalgy++. Is it possible to give Nostalgy++ an option to offer the previously-used folder as the default when moving a message?

This add-on is superb! Extremely useful! Unfortunately it is not compatible with the latest Thunderbird version. Could I ask to consider updating it please? Thank you so much in advance!

thanks for the compatibility notice. I will have a look what happens.
In any case, more info on issues is at https://github.com/opto/nostalgy-xpi/issues

Oh how I missed nostalgy, thank you SO MUCH for re-writing this for TB78+. I sent you a donation, thanks again!

For those of you who haven't tried this, it makes handling messages a dream. In particular the ` key to quick-filter by sender or subject makes dealing with volumes of email quickly. Also the save (really moves the message) is of great value!

Works awesome, thank you very much for this addon. The only thing i would add, is a copy + mark unread function. I'm using this to make copies into other accounts which are used to import email into other systems like CRM.

Great that Nostalgy came back, gladly supported to the bounty.

Anyway, still have a few issues and no other place to report them (or is there a github repo existing now, as promised?)
TB 78.5.0

1. When TB is taking the right 50 % of the screen (WIN-LeftArrow) and pressing "s", the TB window resizes to the right by some 10 pixels, over the edge of the screen. Does not happen when not exactly on the right edge of the screen. Also does not always happen, I assume this is triggered by the slight status bar size change.
2. Add-on Settings cannot be reached, neiter from the add-on managment page, nor from tools->addon settings->nostalgy++
3. The dropdown list is often containing entries from the previous search, but TAB updates the search field correctly and enter moves the mail correctly. Screenshots on request, but I don't know the pattern behind it.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (2.2.2).

thanks for the comment.
1) I didn't even know that WIN-LeftArrow exists. I will see what can be done.

Issues should go here: https://github.com/opto/nostalgy-xpi/issues.
New releases are here: https://github.com/opto/nostalgy-xpi/releases/.

2) Addon settings: which version? Github has 2.2.4 which is also under review. Works here in all versions: Tools->Nostalgy++ (at the bottom of the list), second entry: tools->addon settings->Nostalgy++. Maybe you can report on github version and OS version to see what might be different for you.
3) Dropdown list: no code changes versus earlier version. TB's autocomplete component was changed and is now in a custom element. Don't know what can be done, will check
.And thanks for contributing to the bounty.

Wow! Full access to Thunderbird and my computer! Why asking for the maximum permissions? Nostalgy used to be my favourite add-on but I will not give it full permissions, sorry. I'll have to find something else or fork it. Too bad.

-----

Thanks for your reply. I discovered that all extensions apparently ask for all permissions while, once installed, they are presented as "no permissions". Another weird aspect of Thunderbird. I installed your version, tested it and it is perfect. Thanks a lot for the port, opto. I'll donate because Nostalgy is absolutely essential.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (2.2.2).

There is no change in permissions as compared to before. Addons always had these permissions.

Same for other open source software. Libreoffice, for example, can create/write/delete (settings) files. It has 'full' access to your computer. I am pretty sure they could erase your harddisk (delete all your files) if they truely wanted.

Mozilla is trying to scare people away from the old addon type using strong words. But the new addon type can still hardly do anything near Nostalgy capabilities, we still need the old addon style.

To return some trust, the old addons are reviewed by real persons, not automatic.

I hope that info helps.

Without a doubt the most important productivity plugin for me, every day.

This is my favorite add-on and I used it constantly in my workflow to manage my emails. Big thanks to opto for keeping it function despite major changes to the Thunderbird code and architecture that require significant re-writes by opto.

I consider Thunderbird broken without this functionality. I process 100's of emails daily and this add-on makes it super easy to scan an email and file it away for future reference.

Opto actively develops and maintains this add-on. Issues get fixed and improvements happen! Thank you for such a useful add-on.

Just made my second financial contribution in as many months.

I've loved to use Nostalgy++.
Now with TB 78 can't install it.
Is it available for 78.4.1?
I'd appreciate info, thank you.

Thank you very much for this version that now works with TB78. I would also like to report the bug that the window resizes horizontally. I think it is due to the input field in the status bar. When that appears as a result of a Nostalgy keyboard command, the window is automatically resized so that everything still fits in the status bar. Thanks again!
