I'm preparing to upgrade to Firefox 4 and since Save Complete supposedly isn't compatible, I need a new "page saving" Add-on.
I tested both Mozilla Archive Format (MAF) and UnMHT against Save Complete and Firefox's default saving method by saving the exact same webpage with each of the various methods. Here are the size results.
Default = 234 KB
Save Complete = 207 KB
UnMHT = 295 KB
MAF-MHT = 315 KB
MAF-MAFF = 195 KB
MAF-SaveComplete = 235 KB
Obviously the MAFF format was the smallest, but Save Complete was the only method that was 100% true to the original page. The 20 KB difference between the MHT files isn't much but it would still be nice to see MAF produce the smallest files possible.
~~~
I was just about to post this when I decided to do a bit more testing, and I made a couple of interesting discoveries.
~~~
I have determined that Save Complete is in fact compatible with Firefox 4 after modifying the install.rdf to change the maxVersion.
Also, the page that Save Complete perfected actually renders differently in Firefox 4 for some unknown reason. Taking this into consideration, all of the methods I tested will produce the exact same page in Firefox 4 regardless of size differences.
~~~
Conclusion
~~~
With the superior compression of the MAFF format, the built-in "Save Complete" functionality, and MHT support, I think that the Mozilla Archive Format extension is easily the best of the three Add-Ons. The MHT files could be smaller and the Save Complete functionality could be better, but this is definitely the Add-On I will be using from now on.
Thank you very much for your post, I think it represents what a true add-on review should look like, with comparisons and results. To make it really super, I would add the details of the testing process (version numbers, source files, and so on), so that anyone could reproduce and verify the results. Also, the details would be useful to improve the add-on itself. You're welcome on the mailing list (http://maf.mozdev.org/feedback.html) if you want to provide more details!

Fantastic adjunct to Firefox.
In answer to karinqe, yes Scrapbook MAFF Creator will do that. that's exactly what it's for. Shame on Paolo for answering that he didn't know that. ;-)

This is pretty nice for one page, but is there a way to archive a page structure (like this whole tutorial http://www.acm.uiuc.edu/sigops/roll_your_own/intro.html) and replace the online links with relative to the saved pages?
Questa recensione riguarda una versione precedente (0.19.5) del componente aggiuntivo.The feature you requested is outside the scope of the MAF extension, but would be an interesting separate project. I don't know of an extension that is designed for that purpose.

This add-on is great but it doesn't work properly.
I and my colleague have it on our computers but when we open some mhtml file, it's not shown properly. There is some line in the middle and it cuts some part of the mhtml page. I could provide you with the screenshot if you are interested.
The problem you experienced may be related to the fact that the file you are opening was created with a different browser, and Firefox cannot display it exactly, or the cause may be a bug in MAF. Please write to the support mailing list (http://maf.mozdev.org/feedback.html) if you want to provide additional details that may help us in identifying and solving the problem.

very good module. If it could exist for Thunderbird, it would be perfect to be able to archive news-letters with the pictures

It will be a good idea if the saved page URL be saved with the page too.
Questa recensione riguarda una versione precedente (0.18.3) del componente aggiuntivo.Usually, the original location a page was saved from is available in web archives, and by default it can be viewed using the icon in the address bar. If this is not what you're asking for, please let us know in the support mailing list!

The .mht file saved by FF can't be opened by IE, what a pity...
Questa recensione riguarda una versione precedente (0.18.3) del componente aggiuntivo.Mozilla Archive Format creates MHTML files that are standards-compliant, using the Faithful Save or Save Complete components. Thus, the saved files should be 100% compatible with any modern version of Internet Explorer. If you are experiencing a different behavior, please provide more details in the support mailing list, so that any potential incompatibility can be addressed. Thanks!

Good, works but one very annoying problem: if you save a page, delete the file then save another page with the same filename in the same location (eg you saved the wrong page by accident the first time), then when you open that file it will stubbornly open the old page that you just deleted! This is in Firefox 3.6.2 (and the previous version too), MAFF 0.18.3.
Clicking reload or retrying many times doesn't help. The old page is in some kind of cache so the new one is completely inaccessible. The .maff file does have the new web page because if you open it with 7Zip and open index.html inside it, then you have the new page. But opening the maff file gives the old page. Only quitting and restarting firefox solves the problem.
Apart from that it works for me, the files are small and self-contained. Thanks for the extension.
Thank you for the report, the issue was being fixed while you was reporting it! Starting from version 0.19.2, available on the official site, MAF refreshes its internal cache (visible in the "Browse Open Archives" window) when a new archive is saved over one that is already open.

To Linux users: It's possible to add a MAFF MIME type as "Mozilla archive format (application/x-mozillarchive)" with an application called AssoGiate and then associate Firefox with it. In this way, MAFF is an excellent choice for saving web pages in Gnome.
