EXCELLENT idea for an add-on, but quite buggy. 4 stars is a little overrated.
The intuitive UI is a great idea, but every time I respond to a message, it composes in plain text instead of regular old HTML.
An entire step in the setup assistant is devoted to "tweaking settings to make Thunderbird run more smoothly", and I think that detracts from the goal and purpose of the add-on. The name of the add-on is "Conversations". Why the extra crap that messes with Thunderbird?

I like it but Thunderbird stays sluggish with this addon enabled. The last time it froze the message opening. I needed to disable it.

Finally! This should become the default UI for Thunderbird.
The only negative point I can think of is that the default fonts and message view layout look a bit strange, espacially if you zoom in a little with ctrl-+.

Looks great, and is very helpful, however it cancel the ability to add someone to a certain address book from the menu so I had to disable.

Way too much slow and it breaks some features such as navigate to previous/next message (backward/forward in history) and a lot of addons.

It is probably the best extension available. It organizes sent and received e-mails similarly to what is done by Gmail. It also adds a reply box to the message view, allowing a fast to reply e-mails.
It shouldn't be an extension – it should come by default with Thunderbird!

I like the plugin.
But it seem to deactivate the "ctrl+f" in mail ?
Unfortunately, yes. See https://github.com/protz/GMail-Conversation-View/issues/241 for more details.

This should be the default for thunderbird, huge improvement.

This is great when you've grown addicted to gmails approach to email. I only wish they'd give the thread pane an overhaul as well. As of now, with this extensions, the message pane is so much prettier and more user friendly than the rest of thunderbird.

Aesthetics is great. Very usable and stable.
Honourable mention to the gorgeous gallery feature.

Great, it really shows the whole thread in an overview and helps me a lot!!
I'm giving it only four stars because some things may still be improved:
- show contact picture
- allow to send the reply later (it's sending immediately if you use fast reply)
- some issues with text size (even though it's okay for me now, I had some issues before on other computers)
That said, let's not forget that it revolutionizes (replaces) the way the messages are shown so some incompatibilities (eg when using an addin to display contact photos) will be inevitable.

This ... doesn't work for me. I very specifically like Gmail's style of handling threads...mostly because it's most natural for me.
Why does a new message in thread appear at the bottom instead on top?
Why doesn't the Startup Assistant even work?
Why bother telling me to tweak it if I'm really too stupid find out where the Advance menu? I'm sorry I really couldn't find it. This is why harder than jailbreaking an iOS and figuring out how Cydia works.
Why does the font look craptastic? Why does it not let me customise the shit out of the fonts?
Why...oh dang it. I give up.
Don't get me wrong, its a good add-on. A brave attempt that should be commended, just not very friendly FOR ME at this point. I particularly like the the shortcuts, revissed menus, careful though on layout in the reading pane; fantastic.
As I find myself wondering so many why's instead of figuring what's inside the email, I'll keep this under "Interestingly but not usable".

This is a fantastic addon and makes my daily email a pleasure! The one feature I'd really like to see added is the ability to be able to delete email attachments from within conversation view. This doesn't seem possible at present and involves having to first open messages using "view using classic reader". Thanks for the great addon!
Edit: I hadn't noticed this. That's great. Ideally I'd like to see a "delete" option next to the "preview | open | save" commands.
I thought there was the right-click menu (on the attachment icon) that allowed you to do just that?

...there is one thing that ist a bit annying to me:
I have a lot of email accounts. Some of them I use very often, but most of them I only use from time to time. When I get a new email notification and click on it, I am being asked to enter my username and password for every account. It would be fine, if that only happened for the accounts where I have the "check for messages on startup" checked in the server settings - or for the accounts, which I am currently logged in.
On the other side, this is a very great and helpful add-on! Thank you for this.

I suspect that's not related to my addon. However, disabling the unified inbox (View > Folders > All in the menus) may help.

With the latest release on Feb 18, 2013, this addon is incorrectly grouping the threads. How to replicate:1. select an email except the latest received one.2. hit reply.3. the reply window will take the latest email instead of the selected email.
Reinstalled the version. The bug seems to have gone.
Can you make sure you are using version 2.6.3?

Excellent Add-on! Such an improvement!
Also this does work with the latest version of thunderbird, you just need to download the file and select "Install Add-on from file"

Thanks a lot!

Update [2/11/2013]
My mistake. It's just that out of the box Thunderbird is great but Thunderbird Conversations is what makes it Outstanding!
Thanks for taking the time to clarify this =)
------------------
Why isn't the latest version of this add-on compatible with the latest version of Thunderbird?I'm running Thunderbird v17.0.2 [the latest stable version of TB] yet the latest version of Thunderbird Conversations is only compatible with Thunderbird v19.0 - 21.0 and above.
Because it's just a compatibility fix for the beta versions of Thunderbird, and it brings no new features compared to 2.5.2.
