What on earth are the people at Firefox playing at? For the last few years there has been a British English dictionary that functioned perfectly well. With the latest upgrade this dictionary has disappeared to be replaced by one which doesn't know how to write in "proper" English. Unless it's sorted soon I'm off to use another web browser. The "wonderful" Aurora never worked either.

I think it's a real step forward that you can get an English dictionary for Firefox(I'm using Nightly 20.0a1) rather than suffer a dictionary in a foreign dialect. I really do value this add-on very much.
It would be really good though if it updated the word list automagically by merging the add-on list with a new one from a fairly authoritative source or pointed the user to some possible sources & allowed updates, or at the very least ***allow export & import of word lists*** this last surely would be simple to implement & might even create a community around creating & improving an English word list. Dictionary is a misnomer after all - its is just a word list NOT some kind of map or indexed list.

Mostly, it's a real pain to have to reboot to get the thing to work.

Also, it's very annoying that the langage defaults to Americsn in my Linux editions.

That is compunded by the fact that other versions of English are not included in the American locale box (at the top) as options. One has to go to all the trouble of searching for them in the full "others" list, when one is initially unsure whether they would be listed under country name (locale).

Would it be possible to have a "use Linux(o/s) disctionaries instead" option?

I've been using Firefox for a couple of years and my spelling is awful but the built in spell checker is US English which isn't English at all! all the spellings are wrong and I have no idea how Americans can actually say they speak English because they don't it's American so I'm so very thankful I found this add-on , I just wish I'd found it ages ago as it would have saved me alot of stress .

Download from file from mozilla and select "manually install from file" from add-ons menu and you will have a British English dictionary irrespective of TB reluctance to install.

This is definitely helpful with trying to learn UK spelling. As for switching back to US english, just right click a word, go to languages, and select UK.

I like the Zuckerberg easter egg that I just verified, haha, very apt.
However, I don't like (in the latest example) 'assumedly' not being in the dictionary, plus I believe I noticed numerous times the algorithm being so poor it cannot deal with plurals of an included dictionary word... WTF is that about? Is it American English or something?

I cannot believe that an author of a spelling dictionary cannot be bothered to keep up with the latest version of the most popular email client going. This is hugely disappointing on what would have been an excellent upgrade.

Used Thunderbird for years but this dictionary thing is really testing my patience. Surely you guys can recognise that we think and speak differently to the US. English English is English, American English is American and long may it stay so.

Like Essex Julia says, the lack of a British English dictionary is inexcusable. I'm not knocking American English, but it has so many differences as to be unusable to an English person!
I'm considering changing from Thunderbird because of this.
Please make it a high priority. I hope you have "gotten" the hint, as it's "impacting" on me very badly!

No English (UK) dictionary?

I'm sorry, there was me thinking that English came from ENGLAND. Yet, I have to suffer this American version which is simply driving me insane.

American 'English' is not English. Its American. So, I would appreciate it if you could please pull your respective fingers out and provide an English UK dictionary to use on this new version email client...before I install something that does recognise that not all words are spelt with a flipping Z!!! THX my loves.

Brilliant... when Mozilla 'allow' it to work.

Why do add-on writers have to re-write their work every time that Mozilla do a new version. If New FF is compatible with Old FF (bookmarks etc.) how come it's not compatible with something as simple as a Spell Checker.

The 'Original English Language' should have a spell checker By Default. Aluminium is Not spelt Aluminum, Colour is Not spelt Color... and if anyone even dreams of spelling 'English' as Inglish... we'll declare war on you... And YES... I did say Spelt... not Spelled... so there...!!!***

I cannot agreee more with Andy K. I need English dictionary for my thunderbird 15 too. It was a rude shockto see the red letters saying its not availble for version 15. I suppose I shall have to be satisfied with the Aussie language for now. At least my 'colour' will not be marked red!!!

Why is it that because I have the latest version of Thunderbird the English dictionary doesn't work? How hard can it be? And by the English dictionary I mean THE English dictionary, not some half arsed foreign (i.e. american) English dictionary. There is only one English, all the others are fakes.

I see it's been mentioned before, but isn't it great when a spelling program for Firefox doesn't include the word firefox.
You just gotta love 'em.

Foolish that the word Thunderbird is highlighted as misspelled.

Dear Mark,

Firefox (14.0.1) is saying the Dictionary is incompatible with this version of Firefox.
Would you be so kind as to let as to let my know if it will become compatible please?

Best Regards.
