Hi *,
tried this add-on with Thunderbird 8.0 and found: while first synchronize all my Google contacts have been TRIPLED: from 440 to 1320 contacts, and the default groups like coworkers etc. have been doubled.
Next step was uninstall!
Sorry, good idea but seems to need more development.
Good luck for that, KH
Hello,
I do apologize for the duplicated contacts and groups. It's easy to undo recent changes if you go in Gmail and click on Contacts.
In the future I recommend you read the description of an add-on before using it, or at least before writing a review for it. That is a known "problem" that has been addressed in the development version available at the bottom of the page. I had the following text in bold in the add-on description well before you wrote this review, which should hopefully explain why you got those duplicates.
"When first setting up gContactSync 0.3 you should use a new address book. If you try to sync an address book with gContactSync that you already synchronized with a different add-on then you could get duplicates. 0.4 will merge contacts first."
Regards,
Josh

與 Google Contacts 可以正常同步,非常實用,Google Contacts 的同步就有點怪怪的了~

The first one for syncing Google contacts that works for me after disappointing results with "Google Contacts" and "Zindus". I haven't tried everything yet.
Multiple dialogs for master password can be avoided with add-on "Startupmaster" - also useful for Firefox.

The moment I installed this, I knew this was going to be it. Previous add-ons I'd tried wouldn't sync my entire contacts set properly. Some would leave out my groups, and others would duplicate the bookmarks.
<br>This syncs perfectly. I haven't gotten a chance to play with it's intelligent syncing algorithms, but after how impressed I am with the time and effort that must have been put into making this, I know they'll kick arcs.<br><br>The UI can be a bit confusing for 'beginners', but what kind of 'beginner' is using Thunderbird anyways? :P

It is a nice try and maybe a good add in future...
Waiting for it.
I got a bad experience with it. But looking forward to see all the bugs solved.
It is not really a sync...yet.
Could you let me know what didn't work (via the forum or e-mail)? I can't help you or fix any potential bugs without any details.

No stars from me, just one to show I rated the add-on. Despite the huge number of positive reviews this has been a disaster for me. At one stage I had over 25000 contacts on my Google contacts webpage. I traced this problem to this add-on which kept on generating huge amounts of duplicate contacts in the synch process. After removing this add-on the problem was solved. Coincidence?
This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.3.3).You need to start synchronization with a blank address book. If you start from something that was already synchronized with or imported from Google you can end up with duplicates. I used to detect duplicates and merge them but it was too slow and people complained. If you sync the same address book with the same Google account using two or more synchronization add-ons you will get a ton of duplicates. Removing either of those two add-ons will fix the problem, so no, it isn't a coincidence.

Very good, I used other extensions before but no one was so good as this!
It duplicates my contacts after the first synch but gmail has an excellent function to collapse duplicate and after every sync go fine!
Very very good!

ok, it duplicated all my contacts in google, then double duplcated all my contacts in tbird.
Then i fixed google, hit sync and it disables sync.
So I hit RESET, which DELETES ALL MY CONTACTS.
If you do this, search through all the advanced dialogs till you find the temporarily disable sync checkbox and uncheck it, its invisible and warning-less, but if you hit reset with it on it copes an empty contact list to your contact list, deleting everything.
So once its up and running, it appear to work, but good luck if you already have contacts both places.
There is a long explanation of what "Resetting" an address book does and gContactSync warns you before you do it. If you don't read dialogs before clicking buttons at times you might get a surprise such as this one.
It DOES NOT ever delete all your contacts; it removes them all from either TB or Google depending on which type of reset you selected then after you restart Thunderbird it will pull the contacts from the opposition location. If gContactSync is going to permanently delete more than 5 contacts (the number is customizable) then it will ask your permission first.
You should start from an empty address book, not one that was already synchronized with or imported from Google. gContactSync used to detect and merge duplicates but it was slow and people complained so I removed that feature.

Josh Geenen (Developer) on August 16, 2011 "These e-mail addresses are only stored locally in Thunderbird to work around mailing list bugs/assumptions in Thunderbird. They will never get propagated to your Google contactss" --- >>
This is definitely unclear. Where in the settings does it offer a "Read Only" option? This is THE main reason I do not even want to experiment with gContactSync, much less rely on it. Google is way too integrated into my life for an add-on to screw it up.
If you'd like to make a forum (http://pirules.org/forum/index.php) post I would be happy to answer any questions you may have in more detail. A review is supposed to be a review of the add-on from someone who has used it; not a question or personal statement ;)
Thunderbird doesn't allow having contacts without e-mail addresses in mailing lists. So in order to sync contacts in Google's groups with mailing lists, gContactSync has to add fake e-mail addresses to Thunderbird. These e-mail addresses are ugly, but they will never show up outside of Thunderbird (not on your phone, in Gmail, etc.). More detail in the FAQ: http://www.pirules.org/extensions/gcontactsync/faq.php#dummy_email
There is a read-only option for synchronizing contacts in the main "Accounts" window (under the gContactSync menu). Select the address book to synchronize, set up the account and group(s) to sync with it, then check "Show advanced settings" and pick "Read-only..." as the direction for synchronization.

Too many bugs to be useful. Duplications, empty groups, missing entries, etc.
This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.3.3).If you'd be willing to make a forum post (http://pirules.org/forum/) I'd be happy to try and work through these issues with you. Those "empty" groups are present in Gmail as well if you look. Google requires that every account has "System Groups" (My Contacts, Coworkers, Family, Friends). These groups cannot be deleted. Also, by default gContactSync will sync all of your contacts. Those duplicates are probably just duplicates that you have in Gmail if you look under "Other Contacts" as well. I cannot comment on the "missing entries" without more detail.

Not clear whether the bogus nobody@nowhere.invalid emails addresses are added to our Google account. These are my phone contacts! I don't need a bunch of junk messing up 100's of contacts. Too much work to risk it. I loved this addon before. Too bad.

Superb, it works perfectly! I'm using the experimental feature, of syncing postal address, and had no issues at all. Donation made for a job well done.

good add-on, but it is creating lots of duplicate contacts. in few days it has generated more than 1800 contacts in both google and thunderbird.

Fantastic add-on. Allows me to very easily sync contacts on my Android phone with Thunderbird via Google. I can update on Thunderbird, on the phone or on Google and the updates migrate across as you would expect. Excellent work Josh - donation sent.

Great add-on. Flexible in options, easy tot understand userinterface. I use it to sync my contacts between to PC's and my ceel-phone. I had and have some issues with syncing TB-lists to Google Groups, so decided not to use this.

I'v tried several addons to sync my Thunderbird Contacts with Google Contacts. Most have either not worked or corrupted my contact list(or both). This installs easily and works as advertised. I made a donation because it is worth it.

Works much better than any other Add-on for syncing Gmail contacts.
Thanks for adding TB 5.0 compatibility!
