Only one so far that syncs my GMail groups correctly and all of them! Only problem it does not sync addresses (even with the experimental bit checked).
This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.3.5).Please try the development version under "Development Channel" at the bottom of the page. Version 0.3 should synchronize postal addresses, but v0.4 uses Thunderbird's native fields.
To read more about postal address synchronization please see this FAQ: http://pirules.org/addons/gcontactsync/faq.php#addresses

One very annoying bug. Part II [UPDATED]
I left this same review one year before, but unfortunately the bug is still not fixed:
"So far it works very well for me. No duplicates or accidental deletions whatsoever!
The one very annoying problem I have though is, that once I installed the add-on TB always asks twice for the Master password at startup. It opens two dialogs with a delay of about 3 seconds.
Very silly I guess, because once you enter the password in the first box the second even accepts a blank password.
But still it always opens these two dialogs and it drives me nuts, because I always have to wait for the second prompt to come up before I can start typing the password. If you do that everyday it starts to bother seriously. :-/
Otherwise 5 Stars!"
EDIT: The dev indeed added a workaround for the problem. Works fine now.
Thanks a bunch! 5 Stars it is.
Please try the latest development version at the bottom on the page under 'Development Channel" I added a workaround for that problem--which I consider a bug in Thunderbird rather than gContactSync--in December 2011.

I suspected some flaws in older versions of this addon, however, for months now everything works really smooth. Addon has many options, I can choose the local address book and multiple Google accounts to be synchronized.

A very useful add-on that worked without any problems.

Worked effortlessly; my extensive contact list was imported to Thunderbird, and remains synchronised.

the idea is wonderful, but there are some bugs, as many of my contacts were merged when zero was in common with them.
it deleted the information for a number of contacts, but kept the name, and then took the email address of other contacts and placed them in a merged contact.
if i can find and fix all those contacts, recover the missing ones from my back up, and it doesn't happen again, then i can increase the rating.

Seems excellent! Was struggling for ages - this add on doesn't seem widely used (only found 'google contacts' and the 'Zimbus' one while searching the internet) which both had extremely mixed reviews - this worked flawlessly first time and is far better written than the 'google contacts' add on which i struggled with for ages!

Amazing add on! It let me sync all my contacts in all my machines. Makes a great work on Thunderbird 11.0. Had simplified my tasks of maintenance too much.

After trying a few other add-ons for syncing the Google address-book.
This one works perfectly.
It should be part of Thunderbird, instead of an add-on.

In our company we have been using this addon for over six months now and we cannot estimate how useful this addon is. We have never experienced duplicate contacts. In fact we set up quite an elaborate system to ensure that all contacts are not only synchronized between thunderbird and gmail, but also between users. Works perfectly. The only slight annoyance is the "unresponsive script" message that users saw from time to time. However disabling this message resolved this problem and the sync works perfectly. We have made our donation to the cause and look forward to future releases.

Given the negative ratings lately I was a bit sceptic first, but the addon works perfect for me. Syncing works without a flaw, I even played around, deleted and reopened address folders without any data loss.
Summary: I recommend this add on, works fine for me with Thunderbird 11.0

It does exactly what I want it to and it gives me fine grained control over syncing. Much better than the other one I tried with just destroyed my contacts with duplicates.
Will contribute next week, if I decide to keep!

It syncs only few folder even though I select "All groups" in Option window.
This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.3.4).When you say "folder" do you mean Groups that you see in Gmail or address books that you see in Thunderbird? I think you mean groups, but if you don't gContactSync only synchronizes the specified address books to the account and group(s) that you choose in the Accounts window. You have to setup each one separately.
Do you have multiple groups with the same name? Thunderbird's mailing lists are buggy and you aren't supposed to have multiple lists with the same name (although they usually seem to work OK).
I can assure you I've tested this add-on (and thousands of people use it daily) but it is a hobby, not a job. If you could send me a verbose log over e-mail I might be able to help determine if gContactSync really isn't synchronizing all your groups.

Unhappy with the flakiness of Google Contacts add-on, I thought I'd try this. It wiped out my entire contact list not just locally, but in my Google account. Thanks
This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.3.4).gContactSync will ask you for permission before deleting more than 5 contacts. If you're sure gContactSync did it I suggest you read dialogs more carefully in the future. Otherwise it's possible whatever else you are synchronizing your contacts with deleted them. Without more information I'm afraid I cannot help.
Google does have a very nice restoration feature inside Gmail if you view your contacts. gContactSync also makes backups but they aren't as easy to restore.

I just installed gContactSync and used its' new feature to synchronize with an address book I had stored on a Plaxo account. The next day there was a flurry of "bad adress returns" associated with a group email sent to all or some of my contacts. It was a link to a "get rich quick scheme" html page set up to make it difficult to navigate out of without giving an "OK" back to the page's code via my browser. I've gone into gContactSync and disabled all synchronization until I get to the bottom of this! In the interim, beware of gContactSync.
Per Josh's reply below....
My browsers and system are kept religiously "up to date" using utilities provided by Comcast Xfinity. This includes Norton's web based support for virus/intrusion protection and the use of a funky utility called Constant Guard which stores encripted login identities and has anti-keylogging features. I do not believe that my system itself is/was compromised but rather something I did on the day I installed gContactSync and used it to synchronize an address list I had on Plaxo with one on gMail that some or all of the addresses I processed went through a 'mailer bot' which grabbed exposed unincripted mail data from somewhare and broadcast it. The one clue I have is that the "reply to" name field on the bad address returns was not the one I generate if I compose new mail from Thunderbird, but rather a variant created by some odd process of unknown origin. The real problem could lie in Thunderbird itself.
ZundapMan,
While it is unfortunate that your e-mail account was used to send out spam I don't think gContactSync is the reason. Importing contacts does require limited interaction with my website, pirules.org since it uses OAuth. pirules.org will "sign" requests sent to the site you are importing contacts from but it never has access to your password (more details on OAuth are readily available online).
I've checked my code on pirules.org and it is intact and doesn't appear to have been tampered with. If you downloaded the add-on from addons.mozilla.org or mozdev.org it should be fine.
I'm guessing your computer is infected and once the malware saw new contacts it decided to spam them. It might have been spamming your old contacts but if they were all valid and up-to-date e-mail addresses you wouldn't have received any delivery failure notifications. You didn't just install gContactSync; you added all those new contacts to your address book. I strongly recommend you scan your computer for malware. Eset has a free online scan that removes whatever it finds.
Please let me know what you find out via e-mail or the forum.

Wow, this is one of the best written pieces of software I've used in a long time. Every time I said "yeah, but I need it to do this too" the feature was there for me. The interface is good and the whole process was smooth and ran without any errors. I'm really impressed with all the options available. Highly recommended. My only suggestion is to not log in when you first load it up, and instead hit cancel and set up your accounts manually.

Of the Thunderbird addons for synching Gmail contacts, this is the best I have found so far, in terms of the amount of fields that are matched, as other programs only synch the default Thunderbird fields, without including some of the extra options that Google contact makes available.

Great Add-on!
Just got one issue on a regular while syncing. When the date in Thunderird is invalid it considers the Thunderbird contact to be more up2date and therefore changes my google contact, but I do all my changes in Google only. hence, changes I make to some contacts will be undone/deleten/overwritten by that add-on.
* Found a match, last modified:
- Google: 1315683536515 (Sat Sep 10 2011 21:38:56 GMT+0200 (CEST))
- Thunderbird: Infinity (Invalid Date)
* The contact from Thunderbird is newer...Updating the contact from Google
Pls bugfix that!
Thanks in advance
Invalid (NaN) last modified dates should be treated as older than the last sync. Infinite dates would always be newer, but I don't know of a way to get an infinite last modified date on a contact without setting it manually. Could you e-mail me or make a forum post and let me know how you got this infinite date?
The next pre-release of 0.4 (0.4.0a1--see the development channel) and beyond will have a fix to treat infinite last modified dates as always being older than the last sync. I probably won't include this in 0.3 since I've never seen it anywhere else and 0.4 should be out soon.
In the future I would prefer bug reports via the forum since it's easier to discuss bugs and fixes.
Thanks,
Josh

I have not been able to get this add-on to work at all, to load my thunderbird contacts into gmail. There's a nice support site, but I have submitted multiple requests for help and have gotten no response. Perhaps the developer has dropped support for this add-on?
This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.3.4).I apologize for not being able to help you more quickly. Please remember this is a hobby for me and something I do in my spare time; I am not paid for this. I haven't dropped support for gContactSync, but family and my job have to come first.
See the forum post for the request for help: http://pirules.org/forum/index.php/topic,328.new.html

Works perfectly, just read the instructions and set it up right before you sync. This is the only one that worked well. Love the ability to sync one-way and only via manual. Great job - thanks much.
