Hi! Thanks for this long needed utility!
There is one simply feature missing which would propably make this much easyer and simpler to use for many user. It is identifying location with reverse host. Every time Thunderbird starts extension would detect your reverse hostname (example simple http request to http server and response contains hostname - this would work behind local networks using NAT too. I have several LAN's using same ip areas so this doesn't work for me quite well).
So user just need to put domain(s) for every location to use correct SMTP-server. He wouldn't need to know which IP adresses that ISP - for example - is using.
Regards, Aki
Hello AkiKettu,
Since SMTP Control 0.2.0 you have the ability to enable a "Remote Network Properties Webservice", that is using reverse IP address lookup to find location informations or domain name or even hostname. Have a look at advanced tab in location definition to enable this service.

I am using Mac OS X 10.5.6/ Thunderbird 2.0.0.21. I configured three locations but didn't add any IP address definitions because I wanted to add them later. At this point, various parts of the plugin UI started to tell me: "Error in initialization, please contact support", and the definitions (such as they were) were apparently lost. Originally I was able to choose from the three SMTP servers I have defined in the "Default SMTP server for this location" dropdown, but once the error started happening, I can no longer do this. Seems to be completely unusable now.

Trying the module with MacOSX, and get:
Erreur d'analyse XML : erreur dans le traitement d'une référence d'entité externe
Emplacement : chrome://smtp_control/content/sc_options_dialog.xul
Numéro de ligne 4, Colonne 72 :
-----------------------------------------------------------------------^

Thank you for this add-on. The add-on distinguishes well between two WLANs that I use regularly. The information on the website referenced in the "Advanced" tab is very important for a new user to read. The developer might like to consider giving it more prominence.

EXCELENT!! Long time I impatiently waited for IP dependent SMTP switch. I used standalone program AutorouteSMTP, but it is not elegant and works as SMTP proxy. This plugin is MUST HAVE for all mobile users with basenet at home/work and with 2G/3G/4G GPRS/WIFI etc. For advanced user there is no problem to use SMTP select plugin, but this one is for dummies (after right configuration of course)...

Wow ! Thanks for this excellent Thunderbird extension. I was looking for this kind of extension for a long time. I was bored to switch SMTP server settings manually every time I move to several offices or customers. You save my day ! I would love to have this kind of automatic selection for proxy settings as well. FoxyProxy is available for Firefox but doesn't work with Thunderbird :-( Maybe you could develop the same kind of extension for Firefox, Thunderbird and Sundbird ? Keep going the excellent work !

This is a much needed add-on, but it is unusable. The settings for SMTP filtering do not display any mail accounts and SMTP servers are only displayed as "SMTP 1" or "SMTP 2". Selecting them merely displays a text box that says "true" or "false", which does absolutely nothing for users. Beef up this add-on, and it will be a welcome addition.
Это отзыв для предыдущей версии этого дополнения (0.0.3).Thanks for your review AvantSavant. I would like to have more info in order to troubleshoot. I never see this kind of behaviour. Can you let me know :
- The nature of your host (Mac, Windows, Linux, ...)
- On which version of thunderbird are you ?
- The default language setting (only EN is defined yet on SmtpControl)
- Did you have several SMTP server defined ?
- Are you using only the default SMTP server configuration ?
Thx
Vincent
