I have to apologize, after reading that your emoji add-on worked on your Thunderbird 68.3.1, I then uninstalled emoji add-on as well as Thunderbird and also deleted all the Thunderbird related folders within "AppData\Roaming" as well as deleted related Registry entries, then installed Thunderbird fresh again and the emoji add-on was working again. So the comments I made previously were not correct, that's why I deleted my previous review.
Thanks a lot for your help, much appreciated

I might be missing something here but where do you install this file to see and use these Emoji's? I'm a bit confused since it's not an auto install. Thanks for the help. Thanks to Michael, I was able to successfully install them...excellent

This is a great fun add-on.
Better still if you could add your own custom emojis.

Absolutely useless ! Does not work at all, at least on my PC (running under Windows Vista SP2).
It didn't install any sidebar to the "compose " window, nor any scroll-down emoticon menu. Installing that add-on didn't change anything to my Thunderbird display.
Once again, at least for me it is 100% useless.
You'll have to select Emoji from the "View" menu to show the sidebar.

Thank you, a really great addon to liven up messages. I did not see it, but an Emoji with a hiker wearing a backpack would be great for some of my messages, Thanks again for your hard work.

A fine add-on. I particularly enjoy using it to annoy my (adult) daughter with my old-fashioned (er... legacy) overuse of emoji.
I concur with the developer's reasoning for using images instead of codes as described in their post. Which suggests the following enhancement for a future update:
How about providing for a link to a custom local folder where the user can place favorite or customized images (which are only 72x72 png files, after all) , and access them in an integrated way in the add-on. It would expand the usefulness of the add-on considerably, and, hopefully, require minimal additional programming. Thanks for considering it.

Well, useless.
The display of the smileys has not changed at all.
I don't understand. Can you elaborate?

## Critique
I expected this addon to, well, insert emojis to an e-mail, that is a short Unicode sequence, and only that. Something simple, lightweight, private.
It turns out that default mode is to insert *images*, implemented as link references to remotes images stored on an external network, that the recipient will have to download when they open the e-mail.
It is *very* different (and unacceptable to me). This should really be clearly announced in the description.
There's an option to hold shift key while clicking an emoji, to insert Unicode, but no option to disable insertion of image references once and for all. Details in https://github.com/mganss/EmojiAddIn/issues/14 and perhaps https://github.com/mganss/EmojiAddIn/issues/20 .
## Rating
So, how to rate that ?
The add-on appears to work. Had it titled "insert link to remote emoji images into your e-mails", it would deserve 4 or 5 stars. Current title create expectations, current implementation deceives them.
Basic features work, rating at least 2/5.
Expected feature can work but too clumsy and no option to have it right once and for all. Therefore, 3/5.
I stick to inserting strict Unicode emojis (no embedded images, no link to externally served images) by simply copy-pasting from any web site that shows lists of them, for example https://getemoji.com/ .
## Possible futures
There is still room for an addon similar to this one, but that only and strictly shows unicode emojis as they would appear in the e-mail if I pasted them.
Or an option in this add-on.
High-value bonus points for filtering emojis by "portability", or show how they will probably appear on recipient's screen. Now *that* would be a really great extension.
In 1.6.0 there is now an option to insert characters instead of images by default.

Fun add-on. Would be great if there were an option to allow the insertion of actual images instead of links to remote images. That may add a tiny bit to the size of the email, but so many people are setting their email clients not to allow remote content. Thanks.

Addon is great, what I miss is adding your own smilies.

This is a very promising extension, and quite useful. However, a couple of caveats:
1) There should be an option to make Unicode emojis standard. Quite a few mail programs dislike non-Unicode emojis.
2) The emoticon button currently in the formatting/typing command bar will only allow me to add one emoji. After that it stops working. In fact, the button is so useless that I would like an option to get rid of it.
If you could fix the two items above, this add-on would certainly merit five stars.
In the meantime, thank you for your hard work so far!
UPDATE: I have changed my rating to five stars after the dev's reply (incidentally, thank you for answering so promptly). The reasons are:
1) If it's on the near-future agenda, that's good enough for me.
2) After researching this a bit, I find that I mistook—what I now discover to be—TB's built-in (and less-than-useless) emoticon button on the formatting bar for one inserted by this extension. Sorry for the confusion. Mind you, I would still like to get rid of it ;-) Apologies again.
Thanks for your feedback. The first item is on the agenda. The second item I don't understand, can you provide more detail, ideally by opening an issue at GitHub? Thanks

Thank you so much for your work/plugin!
Love the enormous amount of smileys with all the skin tones.
However, a few improvements are needed IMNSHO.
* I know you can shift-click for Unicode instead of img, but unicode should be the standard. All the email recipients otherwise will get the message "for security reasons, some elements have been disabled". You don't want your recipients to receive such messages just because of a smiley, and you don;t want them to have an extra button to push just to see your smiley. It makes no sense. Even when the smileys are graphically better, img is NOT the standard way to go. Another solution would beto have a "unicode" checkbox in the smiley-menu to (un)check (of course remembered when Thunderbird shuts down).
* The button to switch on/off the emoticon panel should be next to the original emoticon button. I have seen with other plugins that it can be done. It is a message typing/formatting function and should be in the message formatting/typing command bar.
Thanks for the kind words and your feedback.
* I think it's a good idea to make image emojis a configuration option.
* The formatting toolbar is only present when composing an HTML message. It is not there for plaintext messages.

This add-on does NOT insert emoji!
It inserts tracking images, disguised as emoji!
So every e-mail you insert them in, is going to be tracked!
The maker of the add-on knows exactly who your correspond with, and even your emotions WRT those people!
It could have been done much safer, by using actual Unicode characters, aka *actual* emoji.
Or at least, by using data: URLs to embed the images, and maybe the Unicode characters for clients that don’t display images.
Conclusion: DO NOT INSTALL!
This add-on does not track emails. The src of the images inserted in HTML mode is set to the official CDN of EmojiOne, jsDelivr. No personal information is ever transmitted, i.e. neither email body nor email header information. The author of the add-on (me :) has no access to the CDN. I certainly do not know "exactly who you correspond with" nor do I want to know. This add-on is a non-commercial open source effort (free as in both beer+speech :) The source is on GitHub at https://github.com/mganss/EmojiAddIn
In HTML mode you can Shift-click to insert the Unicode character only. Even though by default in HTML mode images are inserted, the alt attribute of the inserted image is set to the Unicode character so if you copy the emoji the Unicode character will be on the clipboard. In plaintext mode the Unicode character is always only inserted.
There are two reasons I chose to use the EmojiOne CDN instead of data: URIs: First, it would have increased the size of the email by a few KB for each emoji used. Second, not all MUAs (email clients) support the data protocol (e.g. Outlook).
The reason I chose to use images (and not only characters) is also twofold: Not all operating systems support the latest Unicode standard (in fact none of the major ones AFAIK) meaning you'd get a placeholder if you clicked on one of the newer emojis. Also, the platform specific emojis look different from the EmojiOne ones which means you'd get a different looking emoji than the one you click on in the add-on.

These aren't emoji, they're images. Emoji are letters and should rely on font for display.
Edit: Fair enough. (see answer below)
