Okay, I've given it a good few weeks now and no solution to the issue - blaming Google for their changes is no solution. I suggest giving Gmail Checker a whirl. It may be old, but it works 100% with the 12 gmail accounts I use. Been using it for 3 weeks now on my test systems - time to go live!

Yep, same issue - displays the GMail webpage and have to manually enter the password.

Another recent annoyance (bug?) is that the mail snippets windows often appears at the mouse-location, rather than popping up at the appropriate location on the add-on bar.

Something has changed (possibly at the Gmail end?) and now, whenever I log into my Gmail accounts via Gmail Manager I received a security warning and have to go through the two-step validation, after which I have to change my Gmail password.

This is a pain and since I have multiple gmail accounts I've been forced to change passwords almost every day.

It seems that the Gmail servers are seeing Gmail Manager as a new/suspicious device...

Nice, very nice. It's good to see a good dev getting hold of this project. Working very well under FF43.0 on Win10. Keep up the great work!
