Really useful add-on. But Thunderbird 68 will be released next month, and EditEmailSubject is not compatible with new specification, do you plan to release an updated version?

This is a thank you to JcB for your instructions. The operation of this extension is so obscure I found it impossible to use until I read your review.

Cela fait des mois que ce module ne fonctionnait plus, c'était très dommage.
C'est maintenant chose réglée et j'en suis très heureux, vraiment pratique de pouvoir ajouter quelque chose dans le sujet d'un message. Merci beaucoup !

I have used this addon for over a year now and it has been amazing! However with the last update it wiped out all the changes I have ever made to any of my emails. That's hundreds of subjects I've changed now just gone! I am not sure where I am supposed to be able to contact the developer because I can't find a spot to do so. If anyone can reply to this with a support link or email that would be great, I hope someone can help me recover all the edits that just vanished!

I finally figured out how to use this this add-on to do what it says it will do. Here is how.
First, if you want the edited subject to appear in the message you need to change the option:
Click Tools in the menu bar, in the pop-up menu find Add-on Options, hover over it with your mouse pointer, in the sub-menu click Edit email subject, in the dialogue box that appears uncheck the check box.
How to change the subject:
In a folder view: find the message that you want to modify the subject line of, with the mouse pointer hovering over the message information right click on it, in the popup menu find the Edit Email Subject menu item and click it, in the EditEmailSubject dialogue box edit the subject of the message, click OK.
While reading the message: Right click with the mouse while the pointer is anywhere in the message body, in the popup menu find the Edit Email Subject menu item and click it, in the EditEmailSubject dialogue box edit the subject of the message, click OK.
This add-on does what it claims to do, I give it 5 stars for that. For its lack of any documentation explaining how to use it I give it one star. Since I had to figure out how to use it myself, overall I give it 4 stars.

To clarify, at least one way in which the headers are being mangled is: Message-ID keeps getting squashed to 'undefined' when it was defined prior to the change.

I had to disable it, it frizzes TB; I hope someone will correct this.

Hello,
What I would like is to add this feature to filters, to be able, for example, to add the list name to the subject when the list server don't do it.
right now, as long as I see it I can only change the names after the mails are in my inbox, and by hand
thanks

This AddOn is a very good idea - Merci bien!
I am very happy with the Update to Version 2, which solved the earlier performance problem on IMAP folders - GREAT! (Therefore I edited this comment).
@Kiwifagan: To clean the subject from "Re: Fwd: Re: ..." you may use the AddOns "CleanSubject" or "Subject Cleaner". They do it automatically.

Using this add-on with Thunderbird 38.6.0 on openSUSE Linux does not get along with IMAP access to Gmail.
I've enabled Googles "Access for less secure apps" to that IMAP is still able to work.
I tried using this extension both with and without "Only local changes (will only change local Thunderbird index database)" enabled.
In both cases, editing an initially blank subject generated a new copy of the email on gmail. However, in both cases the subject line was still blank. (The email had a PDF attachment, if that matters.)
An interesting side note: When viewing the new copies of the original message via gmail.com, the displayed date was unchanged from the original. However, when looking at the inbox message list, the message thread (the new copies are threaded onto the original) shows the date and time of when the subject was edited!
The only clue I have is that when I look at the headers there is an "X-EditEmailSubject:" tag with the datestamp of when the subject was edited. This may be a false lead, as gmail could be dating the new message internally from when it was inserted via IMAP.
If I only needed the edited subject to show up in Thunderbird this wouldn't matter. But since also access my email via my phone and on other PCs, I really need the change to propagate back to Google.
The need to edit the subject line of existing messages is often critical, and this extension should be a standard part of Thunderbird. It's a shame the gmail doesn't seem to get along with this at the moment.

Like many have said previously - missed the ability to change subject heading so as to correctly align search, archiving.
This Add-on is great.
A very nice addition would be the ablity to process a bulk subject change. select a mail box the enter the search string and the replacement string then process all email. e.g.I subscribe to Computer industry forums where questions are asked and many answers are given; the subject becomes messy with all the RE: FWD: R; {Disarm} rubbish that gets added to the subject. Removal of these items would greatly enhance the reading.
Many Thanks.

Hi,
would it be possible to make this add-on available for Seamonkey (by default) as well?
My Antispam Software declares sometimes Emails als [Spam], but it isn't. Therefore I would be happy to have a possibility to remove this. But I use Seamonkey and not Thunderbird.
And I agree Michael36, this add-on (feature) should be Standard in Thunderbird or Seamonkey!
