says, "Thunderbird Message Filter Import/Export could not be installed because its not compatible with Thunderbird 6.0." Tried editing the file as mentioned below but the file appears to be binary (not editable).

I would like to know how this extension works ... I would like to export all of my e-mails from Thunderbird, and i thought that this extension is going to help me, but i can not fine any "export" button or menu item to export my emails. Are there any instructions ?!?!

I made the tweaks to the .xpi file as described earlier, but in my case I set the max version to "7.0.*" (without the quotes) and I was able to import filters.
I only wish the developer would update this,

Thank you Wind Li and Peer.
I tried the patched version by Peer with TB 3.1.13 on Ubuntu 11.04 and TB 6.0.2 on Windows XP.
It worked.
Exporting seems no problem. It always generates a text file containing the filter rules.
As for importing, only once, I got a trouble that the operation terminated successfully but nothing came up to the filter menu after rebooting TB. But, I guess it because the profile data had some inconsistency before importing. At that time, I copied a profile from the other TB and then started TB to import the file. Maybe I made a mishap when I copied the profile manually.
Other than this case, this plugin works as I hoped.
Two unimportant problem to me is:
(1) When you import a filter rule, the old rule in TB is erased or overwritten. If you want to them combined together, I guess you firstly need to export the current rule to a file and edit it with the new rule. It may be just a plane text file but I'm not sure.
(2) While the export button is located on the message filter window, the import button isn't. It appears on the pull down bar of the tool menu. I was confused a little -- "Huh? Where is the import button?"
But anyway, I'm happy now. Again, I say thank you to Wind Li and Peer. (By the way, I wanted to donate to the author but this page doesn't have a link to Paypal . So I submitted it via one of his other plugin pages.)

I am waiting for a really usable export+import function for years. Originally I expected such a feature in Thunderbird itself but I lost my hope. The Add-On here is far away from being good.
I sorted all my approx. 100000 messages into a folder tree with approx 1500 folders.
Now I want to export them in *.eml format. So that a folder in Thunderbird is represented by a folder in Win7 (Linux). The export should take place in one step (not by having to export each single folder one-by-one).
Unfortunately this important core task is NOT possible with this Import/Export Add-on.
I got no feedback from the author if he is willing to implement this (easy) feature or not.
So I am still waiting for a real usable import/export Add-on
Peter
Please send the complaint to Thunderbird team.
This is not the right place.
Thanks
Wind

Hi WInd Li.
Thank for the answer.
You need export it from one thunderbird instance and import it to another.
I tried it, I export and import next. But my filder windows stays empty... Sorry, maybe I misunderstood something.

Making the Ho-Ho suggested changes makes it install. And export. But I can't get it to import anything. It says it does but nothing shows up.

Just tested - It will work with TB6 if you follow Ho Ho's description. For convenience, I have packed the patched xpi here:

Have fun

There's a workaround for TB5 compatibility.
- Download the XPI addon file
- Open it with WinRAR and extract the file "install.rdf"
- Edit install.rdf and look for "Mozilla Thunderbird".
- Change "<em:maxVersion>" value from 3.1.* to 5.*
- Save the file and update the file back into the XPI file via WinRAR
- Remove the disabled addon in TB5 and add back the updated one.
- Restart TB5
I've tried exporting and importing it. Works for me but your mileage may vary.

A very useful add on but alas does not work on TB5. It would be great if you could compatible with TB5

Great extension! I installed Add-on Compatibility Reporter 0.8.5, this allowed me to install the add-on in Thunrderbird 5. Works without a problem!

This plugin needs to be updated for thunderbird 5.0. Please update this asap. This is almost a use or die addon for reinstallations. What are we suppose to do without this. Pleasee!!!

a good idea, a great extensione but...but... I did'nt read all the others reviews before using the extension.... Import does work good but it overwrite all other filters.... dear developer.... YOU HAVE TO WRITE THIS IN A CLEAR MESSAGE BEFORE !!!!!!

too bad I didn't read other reviews before trying this out. I lost "only" 30 or so rules I'll need to recreate. I've never heard of a destructive "import" before. Function should be renamed to "replace".

I tried this extension despite the previous angry response. And my conclusion is that this extension operates correctly, though it would be better to shorten the overall procedure of export/import.

Good idea for the first time copy of filters. But as soon you already have filters defined, these will be overwritten and disappear.

You really need to tell people this replaces filters when importing and destroys any current filters there. All destructive behaviour should be a user option. It would be really good if there was a radio button switch for Replace or Merge. Thankfully I did a little test before handing my filters out and recommending this addon otherwise a lot of people could have had their filters wiped out.As an addition and to see what's in an importing file why not add a message showing the filter list so you can see what's in the import file and then confirm if you want to import or not, with replace or merger options.

Tried, was hoping I could copy filter from one mailbox account to others, but it only exports to file so I didn't want to waste any time.
Noticed the (spamassasin) filter entry disappeared on all of my accounts however upon removing of this installation, it didn't come back right away.
After a few program restarts it showed up again.

I moved my rules from one Thunderbird account to another and it worked for me like a charm, saved my time and energy, thank you!
