As an American who recently moved to Australia, this is a lifesaver! I know when words are spelled correctly in American, but I still have some trouble with Aussie spelling.

Brilliant. Been to lazy to get this for a while and had just been 'adding' Australian spelt words to the en-US dictionary. Thank you!!

Thanks for creating this- there are bound to be a few omissions here and there... I just found one: Rooves. The plural of roof is rooves. (~hoof=hooves, shelf=shelves, life=lives, dwarf=dwarves etc...) Do you think you could update this version?

=) Cheers.

This deserves five stars simply because it's pointless having spell checking if the software doesn't support our language. (And because the poor ratings in a couple of other reviews have been on irrelevant grounds.) I haven't checked in detail - an impossible task - whether this add-on supports all of the standard Australian spellings as documented in the Macquarie dictionary, but my experience so far has been good.

One negative, and this is a Thunderbird bug: I still can't work out how to make this the default dictionary. I've read the instructions in http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Using+the+spell+checker, and they don't make sense because I can't find *any* menu in Thunderbird that includes the elusive "Languages" option. I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 for OS/2 and eCS. Are the instructions only valid for a different version? (As a rule, I prefer not to upgrade right to the buggy bleeding edge.) I know there's another add-on that will let me switch dictionaries in mid-stream, and I used to use it, but I gave up on it because it kept randomly changing dictionaries.

Aha! While spell-checking this review I discovered the elusive "Languages" option. It turns out to be a Firefox option, not a Thunderbird option. So I've now set my default dictionary (I assume) to Australian in Firefox, but I still don't have a clue how to do it in Thunderbird.

Thanks mate for your effort. I do like using my favourite language. It's bonza.

As for some of the reviews, I'm all for constructive feedback, but as a fellow developer I am surprised by some of the negative comments. Robert Martin, yes it may be frustrating having to click TWICE instead of once to install the add-on, but what can I say, life's tough?

oz_ollie, I don't think place names should go in a dictionary, but I believe you can add them manually, if you want.

When you upgrade Firefox, it should check to see if there is a compatible version of the add-on.

As for the tongue-in-cheek comments about the grammar in the author's title, I think it may be acceptable to leave the 'as' out of your title because 'incorrect' could be an adjective describing how *language* is marked, rather than an adverb qualifying how it is *marked*. If there were quotes around it, there wouldn't be a problem, right? Actually, as far as I am aware, Australian spelling is just like English English, except that sometimes American spelling is treated as acceptable, so how can an Englishman claim that Australian spelling is incorrect? (Note the correct use of incorrect here.)

A New Zealand dictionary? Hello, this is for Australian English. Why remark about a New Zealand dictionary and give the add-on 1 star? That has nothing to do with it!

I think it would be an improvement to change the default language to English (Australian) after installation, but I don't know if that would require a change to Firefox or if it can be implemented in the add-on. It's not exactly an obscure language setting. Right-click on a text box, then choose Languages --> en_AU. Okay, so it takes a little bit of searching, but it's not that hard for the computer literate.

Ocker3, that's not a bad idea. The add-on (or whatever it would be) would need to identify who you are, which would probably mean logging into a web site before the commonly used add-ons could be downloaded.

There, I've had my rant. Hopefully I've written something useful here.

Simmosa, thanks for your kind words.

Yes it would be nice if the dictionary was automatically selected after it has been installed, however, this is a Firefox bug, not to do with the dictionary itself.

I have flagged the review requesting a NZ dictionary as inappropriate - hopefully it will be removed by the AMO staff soon.

Would be good if installing also made it your default dictionary, or at least, warn you that you have to do it.
I had this installed for a long time without knowing. and wondered why it wasn't working.

I've been using this for a while and think it's great - I get sick of US spelling in my posts. Is there anyway of helping add things like place names?

Absolute crap, instructions are lousy and do not match the options on my computer. Since when has a 1 click installation been such a great technological barrier???

@ Matt No. Maybe you should makes sure you know what you are doing before calling something rubbish. (make sure to change your language to Aussie English. Right click a text box...)

It won't work unless you've correctly guessed there's an obscure language setting that needs to be changed (as noted above). Probably a good idea to point that out, might avoid some flaming.

It's a pity this isn't Australian English. It's American English. Australian spelling gets marked as incorrect. Don't bother downloading this rubbish.

Matt, Could you please outline which Australian spelling you are having trouble with.
Thanks,

@Aussie Dave, Removing words incorrectly added to the custom dictionary is really quite simple. See this page for a guide that should point you in the right direction. http://perishablepress.com/press/2008/04/13/how-to-edit-the-firefox-custom-dictionary/

I love this pack, now I have to install it on all the machines I use Firefox on. Can anyone create an addon that lists all the addons I normally use and helps me download them in one go? :)

btw Ross, I think in this case it's allowable. In this case 'being marked incorrect' could do with an 'as' before the final word but I'd say it's acceptable common usage. We Are talking about an Australian language pack here, we use slang like it's going out of style.

Even if all the Aussie slang isn't there you can add it yourself. Thanks heaps for the add-on.

Used a fresh install of GNU Icecat (which is essentially a free-software focused version of Firefox) which was driving me batty with its American spelling. Working on a jewel*L*ery while stating what colo*U*rs the jewels are site makes a big difference with inline spelling.

Thank you for the addon.

Well, you may be sick of spelling mistakes, but that hasn't stopped you making a grammatical mistake in your description!

'Incorrect' is an adverb here, not an adjective, and should be spelt 'incorrectly'!

Have been using for a long time now, and it's refreshing to have a localised dictionary that understands my 'colourful' language.
