zindus is better than Google Contacts for one BIG reason - it doesn't lose any changes.
To test:
1. take Thunderbird offline (status bar bottom left)
2. modify contact(s)
3. go online
zindus: changes are preserved and sync with Google
Google Contacts: changes are silently lost!
Change sync mode to Batch mode.

+ "Google Contacts" is better then ZINDUS!!
+ "Google Contacts" supporded more then one Googleaccount and more then one Adressbook!
+ There is also a backup function!
+ And you can use all sub adressbooks!
negative:
- no picture sync

This is by far the best, easiest means of keeping your Google contacts synched and managed via TB. There is also now the .60 version available at the developer's blog which handles TB 3.0.

In the mean time, I am using Zindus which works well:

Sync works great but phone numbers in the list view of TB address book show in the wrong columns and mobile numbers don't show at all. If this could be corrected this addon would be perfect. But this is a problem.

Worked very well after I got it configured. Had used before with good results, but the setup menu like many minor menus on Ubuntu+Netbook, is too large ofor the screen, and does not scroll. Had to mess with the hotkeys (alt+F7, I think) to move and resize the screen to be able to get to the bottom controls. Otherwise worked fine.

The extension works without problems, you get bi-directional sync with google contacts.
Latest updates fixes a bug with multiple e-mail addresses. Previously, only a few contacts int TB would get 2 e-mail addresses from google. Now, first two addresses from a google contact is definitely imported into the TB contact. (Two addresses is a TB limitation)
Some cons:
- Thunderbird crawls while the extension is syncing.
- There is no "sync now" button --> There is a "reload" button, available in "Customize..." box.
gContactSync seems like a better alternative.

Backup you contacts before you use this. It started deleting and duplicating many of my contacts after the first sync. Running on apple, don't know if that makes a difference.
