Worked perfectly, I have names, email addresses, addresses and multiple phone numbers for many of my Google contacts. I set the sync to read only so I update contacts through Google still to be on the safe side. The sync pulled all the information down as expected into Thunderbird's address book. I would recommend downloading a CSV dump of your contacts before trying this for the first time.

Excellent stuff! It works very fast und as far as I could see there are no bugs.
Using especially the groups-mailing lists feature, this is vital for me. And it works.

Very nice. Even the photos for contacts are synced. The previous add-on that i tried did not sync contact photos. The app also allows for one direction sync (Gmail to Thunderbird, Thunderbird to Gmail) or both directions.

Downloaded it today. Left all settings to default. After a while, it loaded the names of my Gmail contact, but its mobile number was missing along with many other info such as email addresses. Removed it.
Later found out it corrupted my Gmail contacts. I originally had around 1000+ contacts and now I'm stuck with 24,000 contacts!

It's randomly deleting phone numbers. I tried different setting. Tried to add the phone numbers in google or add the phone in TB. Still some just vanish. Even whole contacts are gone. It's really annoying standing somewhere and the one number you need right now is gone.
SO DO BACKUP AND CHECK!!

I have portable version of Thuinderbird and have deleted all my contacts from Thunderbird. After sync command nothing is imported and my address book in TB is still empty. On gmail I have more than 1000 addresses
This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.0.0).Could you post on the forum with more details? http://pirules.org/forum/index.php
If you deleted all contacts from a synchronized address book gContactSync would have prompted you to delete all of them from Gmail since it is synchronizing the change you made. If you clicked Cancel then it would have disabled synchronization to let you manually resolve the issue.

works perfectly for me (now in 1.0). Keep up the great work!

Hello
Some time ago I posted a review entitled “VERY DANGEROUS ADDON”, and I would be very happy if the bugs I spotted there have disappeared from latest release 1.0.
However, this is not clear from the changelog, nor from the author's web site.
So, again, did you fix:
1/ the important issue of the LOCALIZED built-in Google groups?
2/ the sync of the PRO fields?
3/ the handling of BIG address books (1000+)?
I do hope so, so please confirm.
But I am in doubt when I read you claim that the addon "never deletes more than 5 entries without asking for confirmation" while some users have seen parts or all of their AB gone...
Please remember that your users, and your potential donators, are non-tech people. DO NOT ASK THEM FOR A LOG FILE OR FOR SPECIFC TESTS. You will just scare them away.
For my part I I'll be happy to donate once the addon REALLY works.
Greetings from France
In the future please post comments and questions like this in the forum (preferred) or in an e-mail. This comment isn't a review, nor is it particularly helpful to me since I still don't have any details or anyone trying to decide whether to try this add-on.
1) No, because I haven't been able to recreate it and it hasn't been reported by anyone else. I use en-US, cs, de, es-ES, sv-SV, and nl localized versions of Thunderbird with unique and shared profiles without issues. Additionally, thousands of users are using the non-English localizations. If you run into it again please send me a log. If you want to see a real changelog of any open source project just find its repository and issue tracker. https://github.com/jdgeenen/gcontactsync and
2) Again, I wasn't able to recreate it. There were several bug fixes in 1.0, however, so it's possible one of those bugs affected the professional fields. If it's still broken send me a log or at least e-mail details on how to recreate the issue.
3) It can handle them, it just takes time. Try synchronizing 1000s of contacts manually...I suspect gContactSync is faster ;). Thunderbird isn't journaled so it's not easy to know what changed since the last sync (specifically what has been deleted from TB). I hope to work on an incremental sync for version 2.0 or 3.0. Remember this is a hobby, not a job, and I spend the vast majority of my spare time supporting the add-on and responding to people rather than developing it.
> But I am in doubt when I read you claim that the addon "never deletes more than 5 entries without asking for confirmation" while some users have seen parts or all of their AB gone...
It's open source, so you are free to validate my claim :) The number is configurable but it won't delete without permission. It asks once with the number of contacts it is about to delete. Unfortunately I can't control whether people actually read the dialog before clicking OK or Cancel.
> Please remember that your users, and your potential donators, are non-tech people. DO NOT ASK THEM FOR A LOG FILE OR FOR SPECIFC TESTS. You will just scare them away.
You would be surprised; many gContactSync users are highly technical and have provided me with logs and other useful information. I've heard from other developers, IT personnel, tech company owners, bloggers, etc. I agree some aren't technical, but I can usually tell whether someone is capable of sending me a log.
Also, I am definitely not in this for the money. I could make far more money in my spare time by picking up a minimum wage job. People asked for a Donate button so I added one.
Tens of thousands of people seem to think it "REALLY works", hopefully you will too. I urge you to send a log or more details on any issues you run into

Great effort to write such an addon, but unfortunately it's deleting phone numbers from my contacs very randomly.
Beeing somewhere, trying to reach somebody and suddenly not having it's number.... Glad I had backups

This deleted half my contact from google and thunderbird.
I re-created all the contacts and a month later, it did the same thing.
Do not use this
Sorry it didn't work for you. Could you try to recreate this and send me a log? Make sure your computer's timezone is correct and that its clock is synchronized.
gContactSync ALWAYS asks for permission before deleting more than 5 contacts so if this every happens to anyone click OK to disable the address book and send me a log.

Postal address does not sync, tried everything, just not possible.
This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.3.6).Did you try:
1) The development version at the bottom of this page? It has postal address sync enabled by default.
2) Looking at the FAQ: http://www.pirules.org/addons/gcontactsync/faq.php#addresses
3) The forums: http://pirules.org/forum/index.php/topic,280.msg1126.html#msg1126

I remember to having used another Gmail Contacts Sync extension in the past which had some shortcomings and issues. In contast, this extension works flawlessly in the background and does its job silently.
Thank you for maintaining this great extension which helps to make Thunderbird a superb Gmail client.

Cool!
As Zindus and GoogleContact are out of order, this is a good replacement.

Excellent Zindus replacement - thanks Josh. I will be donating.

i liked this addon until this happened yesterday:
90% of my contacts on my synced mobile were gone... what happened?
after checking my phone and googlemail i found the answer in this addon which i had installed some time ago...
This addon deleted my contacts without any warning or setting that could have warned me!
i only found out after seeing the log and discovering this message on almost all of my contacts:
"The contact is old and will be deleted"
So if you dont edit a certain contact over a period of time it becomes "old" and will be automatically deleted...
no Thanks i dont want you to decide for me that my contacts must be deleted.. and the only way to prevent this is to set the addon in read only mode...
hey at least a warning would be nice...
well.. thanks but no thanks.
Please send me the gContactSync so I can figure out what happened. Posting here without any information (gContactSync version, whether you have any other sync apps, etc.) doesn't help me fix anything. You are the only person to have reported this since the incident where Google changed the ID of every contact (http://www.pirules.org/blog/?p=326) so a log would be very helpful.
Google has an excellent restoration feature for contacts that you can use to recover your contacts: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/1069522?hl=en
> This addon deleted my contacts without any warning or setting that could have warned me!
gContactSync will ALWAYS ask for permission before deleting 5 or more contacts. You must have clicked OK on the dialog or it would not have deleted anything.
> So if you dont edit a certain contact over a period of time it becomes "old" and will be automatically deleted...
That is incorrect. gContactSync only deletes contacts that it believes were deleted from the other source. Either a different app deleted all your contacts from Google so gContactSync deleted them from Thunderbird, gContactSync hit a very bad bug, or something happened to change your contact's IDs such as the bug in Google's API (http://www.pirules.org/blog/?p=326) that was introduced a long time ago.
Please e-mail me the log as well as any other potentially useful information, such as what other devices are synchronized with your contacts and what apps you use to sync.
> no Thanks i dont want you to decide for me that my contacts must be deleted.. and the only way to prevent this is to set the addon in read only mode...
If a synchronization app doesn't add new contacts, delete contacts that were deleted from the other source, or update contacts what is the point? It also prompts before deleting 5 or more contacts just in case something like this is about to happen.
> hey at least a warning would be nice...
There was one.
> well.. thanks but no thanks.
I repeat, please send me the log so I can try to figure out what happened. This is the only report I have since the Google API bug. I've never seen a case (yet) where gContactSync is responsible, though I fully admit it is possible. Also try to remember that this is a *free* add-on I develop in my spare time. If it was easy there would be many more add-ons that do this.

Love this add-on - it has done everything we have needed it to do. It has some great features and syncs very well with Gmail. My wife and I can now back-up contacts and share them between us too.
One caveat - make sure you back-up your contact lists before using it, and preferably periodically while using it, to make sure you can restore any hasty changes.

This thing is powerful and flexible...and it has many options that may not be right for you. Sometimes, it's modes of operation can do scary things---you HAVE to read the instructions AND think before you do massive syncs. But once you get the settings right, this thing is pretty reliable and does a better job than the Zindus plug-in did.
