AVOID THIS JUNK,

Zindus appeared to work nicely. Then it quit working. Unfortunately IT WIPED EVERY SINGLE POSTAL ADDRESS FROM BOTH GMAIL CONTACTS AND THE THUNDERBIRD ADDRESS BOOK.

The only extension that seems to properly sync gmail contacts and the Thunderbird address book is gContactSync available at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/8451

RPG, there are no outstanding bug reports along the lines that you describe. With luck there will be an alternative explanation. If you file a bug report we can get to the bottom of it: http://zindus.com/i/reporting-bugs

Zindus is pretty nifty. It's definitely a useful tool, I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to get sync happening.

Also wanted to mention two things I especially like:
(1) syncing my Personal Address Book with 2 different gmail accounts seems to work well
(2) addon uses https
All good!

Sorry, but this Addon does not work. Empty Adressbook in TB, trying to sync with gmail, all my gmail contacts are DELETED! What the F*** is that? No questions, no hints, all are gone! Hours of work for nothing.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.8.10).

If you are in sync, delete all your tb contacts, then Sync Now, the addon will try to delete the corresponding google contacts. The next release (0.8.12) will ask you for confirmation before proceeding with a "delete all".

I began using this addon almost two years ago and it's still working flawlessly. Just wanted to say thanks!

It worked fine for me until about 9 months ago and hasn't done anything since except screw up both address books.

I looked for another extension that works to sync gmail contacts with the thunderbird address book and finally found one that works here https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/8451

Wow, brilliant add-on. Had been looking for a decent way to import my google contacts into thunderbird for a while. Exporting google contacts to a .csv file and importing it into thunderbird didn't exactly work as it should; some entries had no name, some entries missing etc.

This add-on does not only import the contacts perfectly, but also keeps syncing which comes in very handy for me since I own a HTC G1 (Google phone). Now, when I add or remove a contact on my phone, the changes are synced to Thunderbird and vice versa.

Thanks Zindus!

I just wanted to specify that this problem didn't occure just for 1 contact, but for about 10 % of my contacts (in a total of 127 contacts), so this problem is not trivial for me.

The only method I found after of 1 full day of searching for extensions on the web for Thunderbird < = > Gmail synchronization is still synchronizing through my mobile :

1/ Thunderbird Funambol for Thunderbird < = > Nokia E71 (SyncML with Funambol server automated by Swim on the phone)

2 / Google Sync (Mail for exchange) in Nokia E71 < = > Gmail

This 2 step process works in both directions perfectly (with no data compatibility issues) to conduct the data between Thunderbird and Gmail automatically (updating the mobile at the same time), but the bad thing is that the same contact data are exchange twice each time, consuming mobile data, but I couldn't find any reliable solution to synchronize Gmail and Thunderbird directly at the moment :-(

Sync of Thunderbird first+last name with Google is on the http://zindus.com/i/roadmap

The reason First+Last on the phone syncs with Google is because the phone uses the ActiveSync protocol, whereas addons like Zindus have to use the Google Contacts API.

I tried version 0.8.10 in the following configuration :

I needed to maintain synchronization for my contacts between Gmail, Thunderbird, and my Nokia E71 (Symbian S60 3rd edition) .

So I used :

1 / Zindus 0.8.10 for Thunderbird < = > Gmail
2 / Google Sync (through Mail for Exchange) for Gmail < = > Nokia E71

While synchronizing in step 1, all contacts seem to be ok when transfered to Gmail by Zindus
But after step 2, contacts that originally had TWO words or more in first name field were splited by Zindus in first and second name.
Here's an example :

BEFORE :
First name : Ana Luisa (Vera Cruz)
Second first name : (not defined)
LastName : (none)

AFTER synchronizing through Zindus, the same contact appears on the Nokia as :
First Name : Ana
Second first name : Luisa (Vera Cruz)

So that while searching on my Nokia's directory, the contact appears as truncated in the results list, showing just "Ana"

I know the second second first name is artificially created by Zindus and not by the other tools or extensions indicated above, because when I do the same kind of synchronization without Zindus, it works perfectly and contacts remains the same through all the process.

For example :

1 / Mozilla Funambol extension for Thunderbird < = > Nokia E71 (contacts)
2 / Google Sync (through Mail for Exchange) for Gmail < = > Nokia E71

In this case, it works perfect, and the original data remains the same in mobile's directory at the end of step 2 ( "Ana Luisa (Vera Cruz)" and no "Second first name" field created on the phone's directory).

"Second first name fields" don't exist neither in Gmail nor in Thunderbird, so why Zindus splits artificially the second and further words in a "second first name" ? I never asked Zindus to change and corrupt my data ! :-( I just want my data to remain intact from end to end in a synchronization process that can be longer and more complex than just Thunderbird < = > Gmail.

So please, let the data as they are, if people want to store two words in the same "first name field", it's probably because they have good semantical reasons to store their data in this manner.

Furthermore, there's no way to easily specify or know the synchronization interval in Zindus options like in other similar plug-ins (that are also buggy for other reasons) altough we can find those parameters in advanced parameters of Thunderbird, so that when we close Thunderbird 10 seconds after having modified contacts, we don't know if the data are synchronized before Thunderbird shutting down, and they aren't updated actually.

The best source of inspiration for the improvement of synchronization schedule options in Zindus would be the similar options in Xmarks extension for Firefox, that are really perfect.
It synchronizes the data on Firefox startup, shutdown (optionnaly prompting) and at user's specified intervall, so that everything is clear for users.

Can it sync two versions of thunderbird, one under vista, the other under ubuntu 9.04, on the same computer (dual boot)

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.8.10).

You can sync both Thunderbirds with a Google account to keep them in sync. Or if you have Zimbra account you could use that instead of Google.
