My Reviews

British English Dictionary (Marco Pinto)

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Firefox has a long-standing bug where the user's spell check language preference is not honoured.

A solution exists for Pale Moon users:

about:config - spellchecker.dictionary.override;en_GB

Profile Manager and Synchronizer

Rated 2 out of 5 stars

Not working for FF 4.0b11.

Over-complex for what I need - simple profile switching.

Strangely, it seems that this addon took the code from another addon:
nic-nac-project dot org/~kaosmos/profileswitcher-en.html
That addon still works as expected.

When trying to switch to another profile, I get:

[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0xc1f30001 (NS_ERROR_NOT_INITIALIZED) [nsIProcess.run]" nsresult: "0xc1f30001 (NS_ERROR_NOT_INITIALIZED)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://profilemanager/content/pmOverlay.js :: pm_runProfile :: line 307" data: no]

Hide Menubar

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Q1: I have installed HideMenubar 3.6, and restarted Firefox, but menubar is still there, it seems not working?
Ans: Right-click on menubar -> Uncheck the "Menu Bar".
---

When I right-click the menu bar, there is no item called "Menu Bar".

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (3.6.20100512).

Trailfire

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Abandoned. The version on their main website is older than this one here. Also, their website appears to have been taken over by spammers.

This is just a remake of that old ICQ thing. Very cool idea.. but somehow didn't catch on. Too bad.

Doesn't actually work.

Using the NASA Night Launch theme, if that matters.

Otherwise I'm doing nothing special with that area. I moved the location bar up to the menu, but I moved it out and re-tested and can confirm that this addon doesn't do anything.

Perhaps it's because I've remapped accesskeys to use alt?

RDown - Rapidshare Downloader

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

FANTASTIC extension, and the only solution I've found to "silently" download Rapidshare files in bulk without a premium account and fancy tools. I won't use Skipscreen for Rapidshare anymore.

I would love support for other skipscreen-like bulk downloading, including both a regular download queue and stuff like YouTube videos.

Feature requests:
- It does currently remember the list between sessions. However, if Firefox is killed for any reason the list will be reverted to its previous state. To solve this, save the list after each user edit.
- Remember the window position and size.
- When processing an item, keep that URL as selectable for copying. Just ignore any user changes (reset it to what's being processed when any keystroke is detected)
- Add another text area. When items pass through the queue, deposit them in the new "completed" field. Currently the file is totally forgotten and the user needs to use a text file to remember all the filenames. This feature is important for files which (for whatever reason) fail to download. For example, RDown does not gracefully handle when Rapidshare servers are offline.

Multi Links

DO NOT USE versions prior to this review, 2010-05-07 and only after this bug has been fixed by a new release.

I can reproduce a horrifying slowdown bug caused by this extension, and only by this extension.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Disable all addons except this one
2) Visit any extremely large page with mixed text, pictures and images. This issue is most visible the larger the tab's content is.
3) Open a link in a new tab, in the background. For example, middle-click a thumbnail.
4) Try to scroll up and down while the tab is loading in the background.

What is seen is a horribly sticky scroll with delays of over 5 seconds. Presumably a faster computer would reduce this speed limit.

Reproduced on a 2Ghz single-core, with my CPU usage spiking to 100%.

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100305 Unity/1.9.2-0.1 (2010) Firefox/3.6.3

Another addon which accomplishes this same thing is Snap Links Plus:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/116390

It has been tested and works without the above issue.

Isn't this just a re-branded RDown?

CheckPlaces

I very extensively tested this extension on and archive of ~5k bookmarks from ~1995 to now, and it's working as advertised. Interestingly, I learned that some servers are returning invalid headers which confuse this add-on.

Two suggestions:
- When reviewing a list - implement the key to delete an item.

- Consider a trashcan list. When deleting an item, just move it to a list below. Then in that second list implement 'restore', 'restore all', 'purge', 'purge all' to confirm the deletion.

This add-on does desperately need a "keep the first and delete the rest" option. However, bookmarks which have a description, tags or a keyword should be preferred.

Btw, the author page on this should link to this mozilla page. =)

This add-on is good enough for me to want to check out the rest of the author's work.

Am I missing something? I see no way to automatically delete duplicates.

It's more than a little clumsy for me to to select and delete 700+ bookmarks by hand.
