Not sure if this extension is supported any longer, so thanks to Frank for what was a very helpful extension during its hay-day, and thanks to thekitehunter below for a new way to edit mail in TB3.
Blessings.

I have used this tool religiously in TB 2 and come to rely on it greatly. So, when I upgrade to Thunderbird 3.0.3, I really wanted to made TB Header work. Some review said they got it to work with a tweak... Ray Stevens review pointed to an updated version 0.7.1 that would work. However, after loading it, my IMAP account no longer works. (My POP account works okay.) The Add-on keeps saying that you have to restart Thunderbird to complete install. Of course tried that. Also tried uninstalling Add-on... same message to reinstall TB. I have tried everything I can think of. I'm very afraid I have to complete wipe Thunderbird and re-install it!! If anyone has had this problem with solution, please post!

Thanks.

Another thank you for the 0.7.1 update. This is the one extension I would choose above all others. One issue, it is no longer available on the right-click menu; or did I imagine it was there before?

There are two add-ons that are important to me 'CompactHeader' and 'Header Tools'. Unfortunately the two seem incompatible, with Header Tools loaded CompactHeader doesn't work (the header is totally removed), uninstalling it reinstates CompactHeader.
In the days before TB, when I used to use Outlook Express, I could edit an email simply by dragging it from the list onto the desktop and opening it with Notepad. Sadly this wasn't possible with TB, but the Header Tools Extension came to the rescue, eventually.
However, I have discovered that TB3 now DOES allow the email to be dragged onto the desktop, edited with Notepad, and dragged back, so that's my preferred way now.

Thank you very much Ray Stevens for this version 0.7.1. I cannot use Thunderbird without this add-on!

But I have one problem:
When an email message is opened, and I want to edit the subject, I click on "Message/Change Header Details". Then the "Header Changer" window opens, but in the background, the original email message that was opened disappears, and the very first message in the mailbox appears in its place. Then, when I close the "Header Changer" window, the original message that I was editing reappears. Did anyone have the same problem? Any clue to fix that?

Other than that, everything works perfectly. Thank you! This is a wonderful extension!

Thanks Ray Stevens. This was my most useful tool in TB 2 and I missed it a lot in TB 3. So far I've encountered NO problems.

Ray,
thanks ever so much!!! The latest file (TB_Header_Tools_0.7.1-tb3.xpi) works like a charm with my set-up. Being able to change a meaningless subject line into something that will quickly pop-up on any search utility is absolutely great!

I use this primarily to edit subject lines, and I find it very useful.

To use, look for "Change Header Details" in the Message pull-down menu from the main tool bar.

As mentioned in a previous review, there is a simple hack to enable for TB 3.0. You can get a copy of rev 0.7.1 with this hack here:

I rate this 4 stars - the ability to edit subject lines is very useful. I'd like to see this built into Thunderbird itself.

Invoking this is a bit clunky in TB3 - you have to look for "Change Header Details" in the Message pull-down menu from the main tool bar.

As mentioned in a prior review below, there is a simple hack to enable this for TB3. To get a copy of rev 0.7.1 with this hack go to:

Andreas, you need to find the file under chrome/hdrtools.jar

But when I install it, it does nothing. There are no extra menu-options on right-click on a mail. In the message-menu, there are menu-options, but they do nothing. No warnings or errors, no nothing.
I'm using IMAP.

Ray, Peter, what are you doing differently?

Ray, I must be stupid, but in my hdrtools.js there is absolutely no mention of GetDBView() . so I cannot replace it with gDBView. It would be most helpful if you could mail to me (andreas4491@aol.com) your version of hdrtools.js. I would love to get TB header back working. Thanks!

Thanks for the gDBView tip, good to get HeaderTools back.

There is still a clash with CompactHeader (1.1.4) though. If HeaderTools is installed then compacting and expanding a message header makes headers disappear completely until Thunderbird is restarted.

Many thanks to Ray Stevens. Its easy to edit the file with MyJarEditor. Free Download from: www.softpedia.com/get/System/File-Management/MyJarExplorer.shtml.

Hi Ray, would you be so kind as to send me your modified hdrtools.jar to [spamtopf@arcor.de] :)

Thanks you very very much!!! :D

I was able hack TB_Header_Tools_0.7-Rod_Whiteley-tb3.xpi to fix the GetDBView() error seen with Thunderbird 3.0.

In hdrtools.js, globally replace GetDBView() with gDBView.

Whitely modification is incompatible with Thunderbird 3.
