Worked like a charm for me. I am using this with Google IMAP and contrary to the previous comment it works for me there too.

Works perfectly. It does what it claims. I am extremely happy with LookOut. Thanks!

The idea is very welcome, but the current version doesn't work for me. I use TB 2.0.0.14 and Gmail IMAP and I still get those silly "Part 1.2" attachments.
Questa recensione riguarda una versione precedente (1.2.2) del componente aggiuntivo.Do you know that the Part 1.2 has an attachment inside? Some times it may just be metadata.

I have no complaints.
This is exactly what is needed. Sending people a link showing 3 simple steps to turn off winmail.dat attachments has proven to be ineffective - but this is almost ideal. (Ideal would be if MS would simple stop re-encoding an already encoded attachment...)
Thanks!

After small issues with 1.2 they were fixed in 1.2.2 now. Now even IMAP Mails work, it just takes a moment to download the attachment from the server, but that is an IMAP and Thunderbird thing - then the encapsulated attachments will appear! This is superb!
Questa recensione riguarda una versione precedente (1.2.2) del componente aggiuntivo.I will look into that but I use IMAP and I do not experience the same issue. Perhaps I have offline setup that downloads the messages.

Thunderbird 2.0.0.12, Lookout 1.2.1
I used to get the indecipherable "Part 1.2" for every email attachment. (IMAP connection hosted from a Windows Exchange Server)
Now I can view and open attachments.
Why isn't this functionality part of stock Thunderbird?
Hooray! Thanks!

have TB 2.0.0.9, loaded LookOut. at first it did not seem to work. The the install restarted TB - loaded mail and just got the winmail.dat file. As noted in the info, after I clicked another message and then came back to the one with the winmail.dat file (twice) the decoding worked and I could see the attachment now.

The .dat file included a Word Document and a PDF.
Lookout was only able to decode original e-mail text and the PDF. I had to use a stand alone program to fully decode (winmail reader)
Also only works in the window pane, not when the e-mail was opened.
Please consider re-evaluating the LookOut Thunderbird add-on version 1.2.2 and see if there is any improvement.

Apparently some are having some intermittent luck with this extension, but i'm experiencing the same problem in one of the "discussions" (one post, one reply): Thunderbird shows an RTF attachment and the winmail.dat, but does not parse either to a full message body. The reply suggests marking the message pane for viewing, which i already had.
It's a great idea, but not much help on execution.
Please consider re-evaluating the LookOut Thunderbird add-on version
1.2.2 and see if there is any improvement.

Doesn't do anything if you don't have the message pane enabled.
If there are two attachments it gives you two copies of only ONE of the attachments, with different names.
Oh well, nice idea anyway.

Well I think this one rocks; at least for the idea and algoritm!
I just wanted to start developing such extension, but now I found yours - already working.
Unfortunately it does not seem to be written very carefully, for some reasons:
- default (wizard) options dialog present, not being used
- infinite loop mentioned in other comments
- ...
I will have a look at the code later and continue testing - maybe I get in contact with you later on!
But as I said before: the first step is well done!

Sadly it's not fixed yet. Four jpg attachments on the one message opened up as four identical copies of one of them. Had to open the message in (shudder) Outlook to retrieve them.

There are some "alert" codes inside which sometime may pop up message infinitely. In such scenarios, I have to kill thunderbird.
After comment out "alert" codes, things go well. Hope the next release will fix this bug.

Great Add-On!!! Such a huge help to our company! We practically run off of Linux & Mozilla software on Windows machines.
Only one concern. On some messages, the script Recursively Reopens the same image 16+ times. I'll look into the script and see if i can help make a fix & contact you with the changes.
Thanks Again,

The add-on works relatively well, except it sometimes generates "dataavailable not working" alert in a loop when opening large files. That is a big annoyance because there is no way to stop that.

I had received an email from someone using Exchange 2003 and was unable to read it other than by web mail. It just bugged me that I couldn\'t use TBird, and this extension resolved it. Top job, thanks.

Hi there,
I have been looking for a such extension for ages and I'm definitely fan of it ! However it doesn't work properly in the following cases:
- Multiple embedded files within winmail.dat (It will only display the first one)
- Large files (when the attached file is more than let's say 1.1Mb, it will loop and generate a popup with written "dataavailable wrong" that keep coming, only way to get out of that is to kill the Thunderbird process)
- With some winmail.dat files, it will do almost the same as described in the previous problem but popup's text is "Seems not to be a TNEF file" - It seems that the assumption is correct, however it shouldn't loop so that you've to kill the app.
Also when handling large files (from 600Kb), it take some time to load the files and it's doesn't display anything while loading. It would be nice to have a msg like 'Please wait, extracting winmail.dat content...'.
If I can help in anyway, like testing etc. I'd be glad to help.
Regards, JiM.
PS: I'm using Thunderbird 1.5.10 on both Windows & Linux
