and why it has to be installed manually :
Thunderbird got MONEY from Microsoft to make Bing (the sound that your head will do against the wall when you use it) the default search engine, but apparently the deal must also have involved preventing Google to be used... Yuck.
The module works perfectly with Thunderbird 52.4.0 despite the mention "this module is incompatible with your version of thunderbird"...

I've looked for a solution to this problem before and only found convoluted config solutions -- no mention of this extension until today when I've finally had enough. Registered just to submit this review and ask WHY this is even NECESSARY?!?!

Works with said version. Mozilla should auto provide this. Get rid of Bing please.

It works. I don't know why Mozilla don't include Google search. In fact, I believe previous versions did include it, because on my older machine with an old installation of Thunderbird I can see Google in the drop-down list. One more nice thing, after installing this extension it's ok to remove it, the Google entry remains in the list. Nice!

Funktioniert wie erwartet.

Arbeitet sauber und zuverlässig Mann kennt es halt nicht anders.
Ein großes DANKE an den Entwickler. Ohne Euch würde das Netz nur halb soviel Spaß machen.

I am grateful to the author for writing a plug-in to fill a glaring omission on mozilla's part. However, the real question is why this was necessary? It smacks of political infighting between mozilla and google. Why?

Works. Save, then go to add-ons, click the sprocket and install.

This would be a better description, if:
In Mozilla Thunderbird, open Add-ons from the Tools menu.
I had a "Tools" menu. I probably do, but after chasing through a mess of menus and not finding it, I get tired and cranky. I know you are trying to be pure in spirit and true to the values of open source and all, but I just want to get my job done and this purity c**p gets in the way and instructions that don't work make it all the worse.

After installing the add on it was not showing Google as option to search. I resorted to opening the Config Editor and replaced Bing entries with Google as primary search engine before everything worked correctly.
All in all - a great tool to remove / replace Bing with Google.
Cheers!

After downloading "Google Search for Thunderbird" I received an error message that Google Search does not work with Firefox 32.0.3!!!
So now what?

Works fine for me. Bye Bye Bing.

Perfect! I use Thunderbird 17.0.8, and I hated the Bing search engine. This add-on did the job for me.

Just installed and is working like a charm. Now I'm free from 'boing'. Very useful add-on.

Il manque juste le choix du moteur...

This plugin is exactly what I needed, after I spent an hour unsuccessfully messing around in my profile folder and about:config.
In response to the other reviewer, I've watched the net traffic using Wireshark, and this plugin does *not* 'phone home.' It goes right to Google.

Works for me

I didn't even know Thunderbird had a web search until today when I accidentally clicked on something and discovered it could search Bing. Since I hate Bing I decided on principle to find a way to get rid of it. I installed this, and now I can search with Google if I want to.
I don't know what that other reviewer is going on about. How can you give one star to something that does exactly what it says it does?

This add-on installs a URL that goes to a Standard8 domain, not directly to Google. I would suggest following the manual instructions on the MozillaZine KB article. Removing it did seem to restore things properly.
I've just re-downloaded the current version of the add-on, nothing in the add-on except for its ID mentions standard8. I don't see how this can redirect to any standard8 domain.
