Works great! perfect to sync between my google apps contacts, TB and blackberry with google sync. Everything syncs perfectly. Better than other sync add-ons because it sync address fields as well. Looking forward to postbok compatible version.

I really like this addon. I'm not sure why but I can't get 'Google Contacts' nor 'Zindus' to work properly even though so many people seem to like them.
In any case, this addon does just what I want it to do. However, those nonesense emails are a bit annoying. You mentioned to another review something about mailing lists but I don't have any of those. Basically my setup is this: in Google, I have my contacts in the plain 'My Contacts' and on Thunderbird I created an address book called 'Synced Contacts' which is where gContactSync places the contacts.
How come I still get those email addresses?

Works like a champ!
Fills a giant hole Google left with no offline way to access contact info. I brought over 950+ contacts from a Palm into Google. gContactSync brought them all into T-Bird with only a half dozen issues with some of the funky contacts. I did many edits, both on Google and on T-Bird (T-Bird is 10x faster than Google) to clean up the Palm data and all changes sync'd perfectly.

Great addon - the first of the bunch that has worked properly for me.

This has been the best of the google contact-sync add-ons I've tried to far.
- maps address fields well
- gives useful sync progress feedback
- provides for extended contact data
- syncs birthdays
- works with groups/lists
- well built, detailed ui
For some reason, the pics aren't syncing, but I' happy with everything else.

If Google is the prime source for your contact info and all you want is to have an updateable clone in Thunderbird, then this extension works very well indeed.
Unfortunately it isn't so good if you want to work the other way around. Thunderbird phone number can move mysteriously between types (so that fax number can become a work number, say), and the structured mail addresses in Thunderbird can be replaced by a formatted block of text. For someone who wants Google to be a synced copy of the Thunderbird master version this is crying out for the option to keep the Thunderbird fields intact, and manage the Google contacts fields to fit - then it really would be great!

I'm extremely grateful for gContactSync, but I'm also a bit worried that its extensions to thunderbird's default contact records may be misunderstood by other contact de-duping tools in thunderbird.
So, I would be even more grateful if gContactSync either had a vetted preference for one such extension or were to incorporate that functionality as well.

ABSOLUTELY STELLAR!!!!!! This is one hell of a feat! Thank you so much for the incredible extension... is on my list of "must always have" add-ons!

I did a test and it looks to work greatly. But I really hate to work with mailing lists, just because the contacts appear at two places.
There is any way to make this add-on work with many address books, instead of working with mailing lists?
Thanks a lot!, and keep doing the great job!!!
Hello,
With version 0.2 you have three main options for what to synchronize:
1. All contacts and all groups (groups are synchronized with mailing lists)
2. All contacts and no groups
3. One group (My Contacts).
These are controlled by two preferences as described here: http://www.pirules.org/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php?page=gContactSync+Preferences#Main_Preferences under "Groups and Mailing Lists". Note that you can only synchronize one Google Account with one and only one address book in 0.2.
If you uncheck "Synchronize Groups with Mailing Lists" you will only synchronize your contacts and ignore the groups they are in. This will tell you that the Address Book has to be 'reset' (all contacts and mailing lists will be removed from Thunderbird) and you will have to restart Thunderbird. Next time you synchronize your contacts will show up in that AB again but there won't be any mailing lists.
I'm working on Version 0.3 which allows you to customize exactly what is synchronized with each address book. You still have the three options, but you can pick which Group is synchronized with an address book and you can synchronize multiple address books with the same Google Account. See this page for more details: http://www.pirules.org/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php?page=Version+0.3+Alpha

Josh

I tried one of the v3 alphas and was very impressed by the design and features of this add-on. It clearly has the potential to be the best of the contact sync add-ons (being an alpha, though, it still had bugs).

This latest version (0.2.11) works just fine with Thunderbird 3 and Seamonkey 2 as well! Much better than others i've tried so far.
Many thanks!

This plugin adds nonsense email addresses to contacts that don't have one. Is that really necessary? I just want to sync my contacts, not add garbage to them. I was using the "Google Contacts" plug-in before and it was awesome, but not compatible with 3.0 :(
If this serious issue was fixed, the plug-in would be good.
Hello,
gContactSync uses mailing lists to synchronize the Groups that you have through Google Contacts (My Contacts, Family, Friends, Coworkers, etc.) by default. Mailing lists in Thunderbird were only intended to be used for contacts with unique e-mail addresses. If you add contacts to a mailing list without an e-mail address or with an e-mail address that is already contained in the list then the mailing list can essentially break and the Address Book will no longer function well enough to be synchronized.
gContactSync adds fake e-mail addresses to avoid breaking mailing lists. Starting with version 0.2.11 (added after your review) these fake e-mail addresses only when necessary. Previous versions added them to every contact without an e-mail address because I wanted to ensure that gContactSync wouldn't break any more mailing lists. This changed in 0.2.11 because I believe I found a way to add an e-mail address to contacts in a mailing list before they are added using Thunderbird or gContactSync.
If you upgrade to at least 0.2.11 and double-click on a contact to edit it the e-mail address will not appear there. Click OK and the fake address will only be added if it is necessary (only when it is in a mailing list).
Regards,
Josh
PS: I filed a bug report about blank e-mail addresses and mailing lists here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=492695

Very useful, Simple and concise, works almost exactly as advertised. Except for a few small issues, a great add-on, much easier to use than other gmail syncs I've tried.
Small suggestion to first-time users of this add-on:
export your contact list from google into the google.csv BEFORE trying this out... while mine and many other peoples experiences have been for the better there is always the chance that some conflict will arise with another of your add-ons, Just to be safe :)

I encountered some major problems when using this addon:
1. Thunderbird froze completely during the first sync; I had created a new address book for my Google contacts. After about an hour I decided to kill the process. On restart, I discovered that only about half of the Google contacts (220 of 420) had been transferred to Thunderbird, no changes to the Google contacts were made.
2. The add-on creates dummy email addresses ("nobody....@nowhere.invalid") for contacts without any email address. This is seemingly just a work-around for a bug in Thunderbird (see http://www.pirules.org/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php?page=gContactSync+FAQs). However, it is very annoying: I can't see at one glance which email addresses are missing and when using the autocomplete function in the address bar it comes up with the "fake" addresses.
3. It creates new fields for phone numbers like Work, Mobile. Unfortunately, the phone numbers were mostly put into the wrong categories. This might be due to MoreFunctionsForAddressBook (https://nic-nac-project.org/~kaosmos/morecols-en.html), another extension that I've been using for years and that worked fine with other sync programs (e.g. MyPhoneExplorer).
I decided to uninstall the add-on immediately - maybe I'll give it another try when TB3 (with the new address book) is out. (btw I'm using TB 2.0.0.23)
1. I apologize for the freeze. Did you receive any sort of Unresponsive Script warning? If you ever try gContactSync again would you be willing to send me the first and last portions of the log (the first has basic info on Thunderbird and preferences and the last part will let me know what it was doing when it froze)?\r\n\r\n2. I\'m working on a better way of handling contacts without e-mail addresses. There is a hidden preference that allows only using this address when absolutely necessary (http://pirules.org/forum/index.php?topic=19.msg111#msg111) but I only recommend using it after I release 0.2.11.\r\n\r\n3. gContactSync adds phone number types (Home, Work, Mobile, etc.) to the existing Thunderbird fields and ignores the actual name of the phone number. This was done to allow multiple phone numbers of the same type and to include more types of phone numbers than Thunderbird allows. The issue with that is the column labels where the list of contacts is displayed still has the old labels which do not necessarily match the labels in individual contacts (See this post and the rest of the thread for more details: http://pirules.org/forum/index.php?topic=60.msg271#msg271). Version 0.3 may provide an option to use the existing fields instead of adding the new types and ignoring the column labels. This isn\'t really explained in the FAQ yet.\r\n\r\nThanks for the feedback!\r\n\r\nJosh\r\n\r\nPS: My contact information is in the \"Support\" section of the add-on description if you have more suggestions or questions.

This is THE addon for any google user who likes to have his contacts in sync while being offline.
The ability to carry his google addressbook around is a feature I've been looking for and this was the right tool to achieve this. I'm just waiting for the birthday data to be synchronized and then it's propably literally perfect.

An excellent add-on for users of google contacts. Works without any problems.
Supports up to four e-mail addresses.
Detailed settings are provided.
Most importantly, the developer has sufficient help and troubleshooting text at the web site (see the wiki).
He also provides excellent support through the forum at his web site.

Super dodatek.
Wreszcie mogę normalnie importować z Gmaila kontakty.
Wcześniej to był duży kłopot, bo znikały etykiety (przez pliki csv).
