Very helpful. I have my full business title, address, phone and fax numbers all added by a few key strokes. would appreciate a simpler trigger than three keys. Would also like a version that hotkeys common email addresses. This works in the sending line but thunderbird's auto suggest takes over and adds its last suggestion to the shortcut text

I'm having a problem with this in Thunderbird v3.0.4.
The text is inserted, but it is overwriting 3 (or so) lines of text preceding the selected "Autotext" entry.
If I remember to enter several blank lines before the Autotext entry, it comes out OK. But if I forget, the previous text is wiped out, and cannot be "UNDOne".

Works great with Firefox 3.6.3.
So simple, but a really useful utility. I'm using it with a content management system where I have enter rows and rows of data into forms.

Sorry for trouble, i installed xpi in FF but not in TB. TC works well and does not require escape characters or so. WYSIWYComplete!

Very interesting plugin. With AZERTY keypads, Ctrl+Alt+m is easy to use. But in TB, it doesn't work.Tried to copy the txcpl.xml file in %appdata%\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxx.default but nothing. Bizarre!

I find it works great with the default file setting. I'm wondering about the whole pulldown with http etc options. Does this mean I can upload the file to a web server and share it with other users? That would be perfect for our context - a bunch of librarians sharing canned responses to common "virtual reference" service questions. Is there any documentation about this?
Hi,
As you assumed the http and https options provide a means to share the contents xml file among a group of people across a network. It's a simple as copying the xml file to a web server and the just pointing to that file.
The way I used the extension in our support center was to have a "master" server on which any shortcut changes would need to be made. On the master server no changes were made to the defaults. We then installed apache on the master server to serve up the shortcut xml file. On all the clients we pointed to the apache server using the http option in the textcomplete settings. What you type into the XML URL field then looks something like: myserver.com/public/txcpl.xml with the drop down set to http://
The only downside to this setup is that only the person on the master server can make changes to the shortcuts, this could of course also be the upside. ;)
We also experimented with setting the XML File Path on the clients to a windows network share this also allows the clients update the
shortcut xml settings. However this is very flaky and not really recommended.
cheers

In reply to Marie. I installed it ok.
Did you contact the developer before slagging him off I wonder?

Maybe I just don't understand how to use this (though I followed the directions) ... but it won't work. This thing sucks ... especially since I donated $0.96 to the developer for a piece of crap that I can't use.
Hi Marie,
It wont work is fairly broad description of your problem would be glad to help out if you can be more specific.
P.S. Please realise that a Donation is NOT a purchase. You can use / test / alter the extension as much as you want for FREE! Donations are just a way to say thanks to the developer.
Gets me a can of coke every couple of weeks. :)

I miss my text compete :-(

I would prefer a solution without a trigger key, but a main switch appearing in the status bar. If you have another shortcut intensive programm (e.g. Photoshop) running, you'll get in trouble.
odd thing: CTRL-ALT-M opens another instance of firefox

"text complete 0.9.9.4" is partially better than "clippings 3.1" - easier to remember shortcut key as its able to be customized as keyword/key-alphabet by yourself.
but shortcut list of "clipping 3.1" is easier to be organized than "text complete 0.9.9.4" as folder is available to be used.

Ctrl+Alt+X is too much. How about just the «space bar» after the abbreviation?

Works nicely, especially when entering email adresses,
the only thing to improve is the CTRL-ALT-X combination, I would prefer an option with a sign combination , like "

This is a great addition to Firefox that will soon become indispensable to me, I believe. There are a couple of features I'd love to see added, though:
1. Space bar triggered expansion. At the very least, some key/key combo that's less cumbersome than Ctrl+Alt+Whatever
2. User specified cursor placement. I'd like to be able to insert opening and closing delimiters with the cursor waiting for me to type in between.
Otherwise, great add-on. Particularly handy since I work on both OS X and Linux and my shortcuts work across both systems. I wasn't looking forward to becoming dependent on something (e.g. Text Expander) that had no analogy in Linux. This might just solve that problem.

Thank you for this useful add-on.
It would be great if you could include an option for "no hot key" or to modify the key sequence. It may be that programmatically there is a reason for your combo though.

The pasting works great but...
The XML file storing the text self-destructed several times with heavy use. A couple of times the information couldn't be changed from the progam anymore and I had to edit the XML file directly.
Be sure to make a backup copy of the XML file to restore or you may be reentering your data.

I looked for a plugin to insert several sets of greetings/contact e-mail/adress etc.
The problem, it does not work in yahoo mail, and is probably not very much adapted for what this use.

This is brilliant tool, very handy.
Imagine you are writing so many repeating words in your emails like RDBMS (relational database management system)!!! or even Asalaam O Alaikum, so I can define rdb for RDBMS.
The only trouble is the button position i.e. Ctrl+Alt+M. Ctrl+Alt are not convenient position when you are typing fast!!
Either it should pick the autotext after SPACEBAR (just like in blackberry mobile phone) and if user doesn't mean the autotext, s/he can press the back key once to restore to what they typed. (THIS FEATURE WILL MAKE THIS PRODUCT VERY HOT)
