Interesting feature.
Should be implemented in Thunderbird itself.

Great idea. Well executed. The thought of tying it to a filter is brilliant. Thanks for writing this add-on.

I used to love ToneQuilla but try as I might it just won't install any more - either from file [tonequilla-1.1.0-sm+tb.xpi] or directly. OS10.6.5 and now 10.7.2 on a new Mac. Thunderbird version is now 5.0.
The install always "appears" to work and it appears in my add-ons list. Then reboot Thunderbird to activate it and it's vanished. Every time.
If you are running Thunderbird 78 or later, you can now add sounds via FiltaQuilla instead.

I love this application. I've been waiting for something like it for years, and have always wondered why a sound selection wasn't included in Thunderbird filter function.
When I'm busy, it's great being able to ignore emails except for those sent by specific recipients. It's like have talking Caller I.D.
Additionally, you can use it at night and set it to only make a sound when emergency emails come in or those from specific senders (e.g., your children, spouse, etc.).
What neostart (another reviewer) mentions about the default sound is true but easily addressed. After creating the ToneQuilla filter(s), simply turn off the default sound and create another ToneQuilla filter that's the opposite of the other(s).
For instance, let's say you want to be alerted when your children email you. Create a filter based on your kids' names (e.g., Sender matches Son's Name and Sender matches Daughter's Name). Then create another filter that's the opposite (e.g., Sender does NOT match Son's Name and Sender does NOT match Daughter's Name). The first filter would have the unique sound selected for your kids (or any others from whom you always want to hear), while the second filter might be associated with the default sound.
The above mentioned technique not only solves the problem that neostart cited, on the top of that, one then has the ability to easily toggle an unlimited number of filters simply using Thunderbird's Message Filter window. I find this comes in handy since I have different preferences depending on the time of day or night.

When you have checked default sound option in configuration of Thunderbird, you add as many sound you like and you can go eating, reading or even playing, so you get noticed.
The problem is, I hear default software beep as default and the long music for some filter is cutting down to minumum ...

First of all, I have the visual email alert turned off in Thunderbird. I've always found it to be distracting especially since I receive a somewhat high volume of email everyday and I have Thunderbird checking for new mail every minute.
I do however always have my PC's audio on so this add-on is ideal for me.
No longer will I have to stop whatever I may be doing to check the new mail that has just come in only to find that they are of no great importance right now and they do not require immediate attention such as for Google Alerts, forum and post replies etc.
I can setup a sound for any filter that is offered in Thunderbird (which I believe to be the most underused feature) and I'll know exactly what has arrived and whether or not I want/need to stop what I'm doing to go view and respond to that new mail.
Thanks a lot.
Your add-on will allow me to manage my time more efficiently which will increase my productivity with whatever I may be working on.
ToneQuilla greatly enhances Thunderbird and because of that I believe that it will/should become a recommended add-on.

It works. It does exactly what it says and it does it the way this should have been done from the start by the core product.
Adding a sound to a filter works wonderfully. If you've already got filters it's a breeze to add another entry for sound and you're done.
