ok, so new addon is out, and works pretty much good!
but i have 1 minor(but important) issue:
im using ubuntu 10.04, and before update to TB10, i used to be able to minimize TB to tray, and then restore it with using my keyboard shortcut for starting TB in first place, NOW I CANT DO THAT. I can minimize but cant restore using only keyboard!
anyway, tnx for making this good addon
Thanks for your kind review. Please use the dedicated issue tracker (https://github.com/foudfou/FireTray/issues) for reporting issues.
I'm working on a shortcut port/implementation:

[EDIT] Now implemented and will be released in v0.4.2. See https://github.com/foudfou/FireTray/issues/36

Every new update of TB now causes a minor panic when it says "Firetray no longer compatible with this version".
Fortunately, the developer versions bring Firetray back to life - so far...
I really would not want TB without the convenience of Firetray.
The up-to-date indicator of how many unread mails is vital.
The convenience of clicking the panel icon instead of searching for the "minimize" button every time, is a big plus.
It should be encouraged, developed & re-incorporated in the main add-ons, like in the good old days!

Really fantastic add-on! Worked flawlessly until Thunderbird 9 came out :(
Could you please update it for TB 9?

This plugins causes issues with closing/restoring thunderbird.
If you minimize it to the tray and then start thunderbird as normal (not via clicking on the icon) you need to close it twice for it to be minimized again.
Only happens if this add-on is activated. "MinimizeToTray revived" has no such issue, but hasnt got the same functionality...
On top of that I miss the feature to exclude my trash-folder from message-count.

Works very nicely
If you can't install the latest version with TB8, first download it manually from it's homepage (in this case it's firetray-0.3.4.xpi). Then go to the addons tab on TB, click the tools icon, "Install from file". Look for it. It'll work fine :)

I can't live without this addon! ;-)
The version 0.4.0a5 works very good with TB8, I have no problems.

With the possibility in the new version to exclude rss feeds and usenet news, it's now perfect for me :)

It worked for me before TBird 6.0 and I really liked it. I just upgraded to TB 6.0 on Ubuntu and no matter what I tried I cannot get the new mail icon to appear in the Notification Area. I'd rather not install packages just to get this one extension to work so hopefully the author can easily fix this.

In reply to vincentp010: this works, but only after installing scons and downloading the Gecko SDK (and for whatever reason the build system doesn't like the variable pointing to this to have .. in it).

Just go to http://code.google.com/p/firetray/downloads/list, and download the 0.3.1 source.
Edit the generate_install_rdf.sh to set max version to 6.* and run build.sh to make the extention work with the new version of xulrunner.
Tested and approuved on X86_64 with archlinux

Thank you very much!
Worked great with Thunderbird 5 Beta - Ubuntu 11.04. But since I updated to Thunder Bird 6 official release, this does not work any more, even try to close or minimize, still no Thunder bird icon in system tray.
Best regards,
Quy

Great add-on. Unfortunately 0.3.1 doesn't work anymore with TB 5.0 on Kubuntu 11.04.
