SearchWith comes with most of the popular search engines already built in. It's fairly easy to configure for additional searches once you have a basic understanding of OpenSearch.

I work with books, that means searching libraries and data bases all around the world. Before I came across this marveolous add on, I had to chose from my Bookmarks the url of my next search destiny. Now no more.
I admit it is a bit tricky, for a man of letters like me to get the grasp of how to make the thing work, but once you realize that you have to create the engine first, and then the service, it is absolutely easy. All my students will be using it next term.
This is a great application, and I hope the author will keep on adding more features to this really useful application.

What I wanted: the addition of my search engines to the right-click context pop-up, so I wouldn't have to mouse up to the search box and change the search engine for a one-off switch between engines.

My search engine is usually on Google, but sometimes I want to search with, say, Wikipedia or Worldcat.

With SearchWith I can do this, but there's a lot of other stuff I don't want, which makes the user interface more oblique than it would be with the simpler concept. And then there is this strange indirection, with "services" instead of just search engines. I'm sure there's a good reason for that, and it is quite likely that many other users really love all that other stuff, which is fine: I just wish there was a smaller, cleaner option.

I poked around and discovered that "Auto Context" does what I want with a little less fiddling, so I'm using that instead. HyperWords look fascinating, but currently is way more than I want.

But the tool seemed to work fine -- just too fancy.

I don't think you could have made this extension any more confusing.

This is one of the more useful addons that I have come across. Great for research completely streamlines the search process. Configuring new search services can be a bit daunting though.

Here is a video overview of the process:

A fantastic time saving tool.

I use this all the time on Firefox and Thunderbird.

It's fast and instantly available. My favourite add-on!

It works, but the interface for configuring search engines is pretty confusing.

Tip: figure out where your firefox search plugins folder is, and in SearchWith's "Manage Services" window, go to the General tab and add your searchplugins folder, then go to the "Engines" tab and click "Import Search Plugins", then go to the Services tab, make up a label for an engine and click Add Service, then click "More Engines", then choose one of your search engines. Whew! That could all have been done in about 2 clicks...

But again, it does work and is incredibly useful.

Nearly perfect add-on for those of us who wish to configure our own search-engines. Elegant in design and appearance. It allows us to use one of the MANY pre-configured engines or we can easily create our own... by category/group or individually. Just run a search on the site to be added and copy the URL and parameters that follow the search word into the "Search With" configuration. Voila! A new engine!

The add-on also retrieves the favicon for us so that our menus look good and it launches the URL's that we encounter on web pages if we copy and "send to address bar".

THANK YOU!

To the developer; If there is any way to configure/condense the menu spacing slightly to keep the menus a little smaller, I would appreciate that.

Send me an email if you need further assistance. See developer comments for the email address.

*REVIEW UPDATED BELOW*

SearchWith is a fantastic extension, something I used on a daily basis with Firefox 2. But I recently discovered that this add-on, while compatible with Firefox 3, nevertheless causes some problems with the browser's UI.

Namely, it makes it difficult to open folders in the sidebar -- after double-clicking a folder, you have to close the sidebar and re-open it before the folder actually expands. It also forces the sidebar to remember your position in the list the next time you open it, making it a hassle to click the high-traffic items most people place at the top of the list.

This is a disappointment, but I have high hopes that the devs will be able to remedy the problem quickly.

UPDATE: I said I had high hopes SearchWith would get fixed, and I was not disappointed.

Less than twelve hours after contacting the devs with my problem, I received a reply diagnosing the bug and offering a quick fix, as well as a pledge to implement a permanent solution via update ASAP. Very impressive work, I say.

For those experiencing the SearchWith sidebar conflict, you can view the solution here:

... it would be even better if adding search engines wasn't so hard. Of course it might be me, but at least one other person has trouble adding the imdb.com search to it. I managed to do it, but others search engines have eluded me so far.
Either make that easier, a good dialog box with checkmarks or please provide a detailed instruction how to add search engines.
It save a LOT of strokes, RSI, it opens in a new tab, etc, it's great.
