Great for archiving an old account to Local Folders from IMAP. Worth the $1 contribution for sure.

Source code is here https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/files/browse/21107/file/chrome/smartsave.jar/content/smartsave/smartsave.js#top

SmartSave worked well up to TB3. As an alternative now, try https://addons.mozilla.org/it/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/ (from https://nic-nac-project.org/~kaosmos/index-en.html).

The programmer seems to be dead. Even multiple tries to email were not responded. Or the emails ended in the SPAM directory? I tried to find anybody to update this - really usefull! - add-on through bugzilla but got rejected. It is not supported.
If the programmer reads this he is invited to answer to goetzibubu@hotmail.com

I'll try to make it work with new versions, but how to get the source code of the SmartSave or everything is in the xpi archive?
Why http://www.nic-nac-project.de/~kaosmos/mboximport-en.html is not listed here - in Thunderbird add-ons page?

Does not work with TB 3.6.14 please upgrade

Many thanks to Kryclm for pointing to this new "ImportExportTools" at: http://www.nic-nac-project.de/~kaosmos/mboximport-en.html
and for doing it HERE. Ever since upgrading to TB 3.x I sorely missed SmartSave. I haven´t tested all functions of the "ImportExportTools", but exporting every mail of a folder to .eml (with attachement) or .html files (sadly without attachement so far) seems to work well.
Still two stars for SmartSave, because it worked so well with TB 2.x. :-)

Please proceed with caution as I just found this import/export tool today. It's called ImportExportTools...http://www.nic-nac-project.de/~kaosmos/mboximport-en.html
I've only used it on 7 inbox subfolders and have not had any issues yet. It creates a html index of the emails that are exported which looks like it might come in handy for future accessing. Good Luck!

The collective body here has spoken - The current version of Smart Save does not work with Thunderbird 3.x
If you have found an alternative resource please post it here.
thanks

Should be a zero star rating now, it WAS a great utility, but no longer. It would be nice if there was a way to have the information corrected to reflect that it only works with Versions 1.x and 2.x.
Concerning the previous review - there is no need to contact the gentleman - the license cited is the GNU variant, which allows anyone to modify the app (with some restrictions on commercial use). My (non-lawyer) take on this is that if you fix and publish you are good, but you likely couldn't accept any payment for this - not sure if 'donations' would be acceptable. I'd happily donate a few bucks to anyone who fixed this!

I am trying to get a hold of the developer to request permission to update this! Does anyone know how to reach him? I would love to get this functional again.

I agree with previous comment. Please upgrade for 3.1. I installed 3.1 before realizing smart save would not work and that 3.1 did not have an export setting.

I can't upgrade to TB 3 for this. Smartsave is reason why I'm using TB at work. Please update it for TB 3!!

When attempting to export any folder, the error below appears:
SmartSave can't export the selected folder!

This always used to work on Thunderbird 2 but I've got 3.04 and it just doesn't work. Pity, it was such a good tool as well. Hopefully someone will update it eventually.

Installed for me in TB 3.0.4 [on Linux], but I got the same javascript error as Chris: "SmartSave can't export the selected folder." I tried it on all kinds of folders; no success. Looks like maybe this is an outdated/unsupported plugin. Sorry for the 1-star rating but the review system requires that I select a rating, and since this is non-functional for me it's the only one that fits. Happy to re-rate if a working version gets posted.

reading all the comments I wasted enough time! It is rather a massive waste than something that could be used!
The thing is, as with many open source crap, one thing gets updated and a thousand other add ons don't!
This entire "EXPERT PROFESSIONAL" environment sucks to the sky and beyond!

Does not work at all for me... Thunderbird 3.0.5.
Always says "SmartSave can't export the selected folder!" for every folder here. :-(

You write it works with Thunderbird: 0.8 - 3.0.* - I have 3.0.4 and it cannot be installed because it gives the error it's not compatible. So...?

This was a great addon, however I can't get it to work in 3
