Let's say you make a template with the subject line "Hello", then create a message filter to autorespond using the template, a strange thing happens. The autoresponder subject line will not just be "Hello". It will be "Hello (was: XXXX)" where XXXX is the subject line of your autoresponse trigger email. This issue is on Tbird 3.1.6....not sure about previous versions.
Can Clean Subject stop this from happening? Thanks! -greg

The extension looks like a great one but it doesn't work in 3.1.2 The options work but there is no way to invoke it. If someone has got it work please post. The support site no longer works.

Hi gworley,
the extension does work in 3.1.2, too. The extension can't be invoked manually - it'll be invoked automatically when you reply or forward a mail.

Cheers!

Ditto Pierre's request in his review on Dec. 9, 2009. I'm a newbie from Eudora (sad loss to the world) and very frustrated by the inability to rewrite subject lines in messages received. I want to be able to go back in 6 months and see at a glance what the "read this!" email was about. (yes, I save messages forever, and it's been a life saver more than once!)

Funktioniert tadellos.

". Dies ist unbeabsichtigt irreführend. Trotzdem vielen Dank.

Lovely Add-On :-)

Surprisingly since I use TB3 it doesn't work any more for FORWARDED messages.
If I forward a message the result looks like this:
"Fwd: Re: Test Mail"

Forwarding for TB3 is fixed in v0.4.2. :)

This is a suggestion for another add-on somewhat along the same lines. I would enjoy being able to modify the subject line of a received message. This was possible in the Pegasus e-mail client and was quite useful.

Best regards. Pierre.

The localized reply prefixes in Outlook (e.g., VS: in my language) have been annoying me for a long time but no more. Vielen Dank! The possibility of mangling the forward subject (i.e., removing the brackets...) is a nice bonus.

There seems to be a minor issue: if I modify the settings for the extension, they are not saved until I exit Thunderbird manually. This was somewhat strange (and annoying) as the only reason for my Thunderbird getting closed is killing at shutdown (well, unfortunately it does hang sometimes...). I've noticed this on two WinXP machines. Hence four stars only.

Oh, and one more thing: In the Help tab of the extension settings, the fourth row in the Regular expressions section should refer to parentheses instead of brackets.

The last two entries on the General tab should be:
(.*) [\[\(]fwd?:( .*)[\]\)] and (.*) [\[\(]was: (.*)[\]\)]

Note the pair of brackets around the second ".*" in each case.

Once you've done this, it works perfectly!

Works great except for spaces
How to you make it work for whitespaces ?
What is the grep expression for 0 or multi whitespaces?
\s is not working
thanks

@Tobermory1

Delete the rule near the bottom of the list, something like this:

(.*) [\[\(]fwd: .*[\]\)]

I don't know exactly what it was since I deleted it myself already. :)

Cleaning the subject of an email with the following subject line when I forward it doesn't work properly:
RE: [Fwd: RE: Subject]
It results in a new subject line of just:
Re:
How do I fix that? Note, that using Reply on this email works fine.

Great addon. But with the following subject line, there seems to be a bug, which I do not figure out how to solve:
Re: [Fwd: [Fwd: Re: My Real Subject]]

When replying, it gets Re: My Real Subject (which is correct), but when forwarding this message, the subject is changed to [Fwd: [Fwd:] (which misses the important part). I am using only the default settings. Can anybody help me?

works nice, but I receive some mail through a listserver, which removes its '[xxx]' tag from anywhere inside the subject line, then adds it back to the front, so that the subject lines appear like:
[xxx] re: Re: RE: aw: ....
or
re: [xxx] re: Re: RE: aw: ...

It would be nice if I could have a way to preseve that tag (anywhere on the subject line) but ignore it for the purposes of removing prefixes. I tried defining a prefix '(\[xxx\])' that should be recognized as prefix but left alone (everything between () is not deleted). However doing that, it deletes everything after the [xxx] Tag and the actual Subject is also deleted.

Works great! The only thing that is weird is that when I put a test statement in the test tab, it ends up as a filter on the first tab.

Perfect! Thanks for creating this Add-on!
I am loving it, so I also can remove the "[ ]" brackets on forwarding messages (I don't like the brackets).
Really good idea and works pretty well.

Danke, Danke dafür!
