Simply excellent -- great way to stop scripts and other malware. Twice incoming emails from trusted users -- which looked suspicious and I did NOT click on any links in them -- twice viewing them messed up my T-bird settings (in LINUX!) Tthis extension makes it so convenient to preview email in plain text, determine if the message is legit, then view in HTML with one somple click. Kudos! If you manage to get "allow HTML" to "stick" to approved messages permanently, so much the better!

I have been looking for a way to strip HTML tags from quotes when replying and this addon is the closest thing I've found. I can view ALL my mail in plain or simple mode and then hit this button to see normal email when needed. When I press Reply, the quoted message is stripped and I am still able to use my HTML signature because I am composing in HTML mode by default. I wish I could view in HTML mode and reply with stripped plain text quotes, but oh well.

This is really nice. What's missing is some indicator whether an email uses HTML. That indicator could be a small symbol that appears in the header bar or in the status bar (e.g. together with the "Allow HTML" symbol), every time an email has an HTML part. Often it is not possible to tell whether an email uses HTML or not. I believe that's what also "Apedemak" meant in his comment below (from Jan 2010). (BTW, an old email client, "Foxmail", used such an indicator)

Edit May 14th:
Maybe, simply by not displaying this add-on's changing icon in the status bar, whenever a message is in plain text, would be enough to indicate that a message has no html part. I keep finding myself clicking on the html option in the status bar while some messages just don't have html.

Useful add-on. Unfortunately when an e-mail is opened in a new tab, and then switch between tabs, the HTML status isn't remembered, which is quite annoying.

This is a useful tool that makes it easier to keep HTML off and thereby protect oneself from various forms of spyware. But I'd like to see better integration with TB's junk filtering and untrusted image loading features. If junk detection declares an email as a false positive, you should be able to (1) declare it not junk, (2) download images, and (3) view as HTML in one click. Instead, right now you have to do each thing separately. I realize some won't want to do this, but I'd like this add-on to have the option of doing all three steps at once.

This extension is great. Very simple interface. Would be nice if there was something available from context menu or via a configurable shortcut/hotkey, rather than a button you need to add to the toolbar. I don't like using my mouse, which is why I mention this, and only give it 4 stars. Still, this should be default behavior in Thunderbird (it is in Outlook, even), as it is much more secure to always view in plain text, and selectively html from trusted sources.

Please re-include the RIGHT-CLICK menu option...
that was the only method that was FAST and easy to turn on and off,
all the others you've replaced it with are slow and cumbersome.

Lots of people don't use Thunderbirds expanded header buttons...
on large resolution screens, the buttons end up way off to the right side of the screen,
it's a pain to mouse over there and click them, so the expanded header becomes useless.

The RIGHT-CLICK menu was perfect, it was fast...
you never should have removed that one feature.

I hope you bring it back. Thx!

Could you please make this add-on work also in the feed-reading mode so that I can switch between original html and plain text as in the mail-reading mode?

thanks, i have it back again !

yep you usually have to click
view
toolbars
customize

and drag it to the desktop

it might not look like above if you are using non default skins on t-bird

and don't forget to set
view
message body
"as plain text"

Works, but i had to add the button manually to the toolbar. In the bar of the action buttons as shown in screenshot 2 i see nothing - integration was better in the old version of thunderbird

Hi

When did you update this add-on to TB 3.* ?

The modification suggested allows installation, but when I try to access the 'Options', I get a very small pop-up error dialog which only says
"Problem lo..." and noting else.
As well there is no icon to drag to the toolbar.

Would it be possible to default to plain text or html based on the domain or sender? That would be really useful dealing with mail sent by Lotus Notes for example

Works great!

Just change line 17 of install.rdf to
(em:maxVersion) 3.* (/em:maxVersion)

(Sorry, had to replace the brackets so this would post)

I edited the RDF file and it works in Thunderbird 3.0.1. Just change line 17 to
"3.*"
...if you dare.
