Works well, mostly, but still uses the older APIs and requires full access to the computer. This is a potential security nightmare.

Update to respond to developer
Thank you for responding and thank you that you're working on a solution. After Thunderbird crashed (taking out my profile including plugins, local contact list, etc), I have had to set up everything from scratch. The add-ons permissions dialog makes the problem clear. As users, unless we want to abandon Thunderbird, we have to ask developers to join in solving the problem. I want to thank the developer for sharing his development plans, challenges and that he is working to solve the problem.

Hi
With Thunderbird 91, I've started to migrate to the new WebExtension API system, that's easy and very convenient, but the main issue is that it misses a lot of API (for the filters, the quick filter bar, etc...)... so it will be done but requires a lot of time... sorry...

A lifesaver! Too bad it's not the default Address book...

CardBook looks to be full of features, anyway it's missing some of the most important and useful, like import contacts from the Thunderbird native addressbook. It does the import the very first time, but if you want to do it again... no way.

Further, the import from file feature is clumsy, confusing and not documented.
You have to rely only on tries and guess what happens.
And no, no copy and paste contacts does't work.

Plus, the sync is buggy, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. And the categories are not synced with Google if you want to keep the ones already existing (you must create new ones and the rename them... guess if you have many...)

Hi
omg !... it's possible to do the import of the Thunderbird standard address books when you want : "Add a new address book", then select the third option "Import Thunderbird's standard address books"...

for the others points, may you email me at cardbook (at) cardbook.icu all of this should work without any problem... I'm very interested by your case...

(first be sure to use the last CardBook version (60.8), then restart Thunderbird and readd your Google address book...)

I was led to Cardbook because I wanted an add-on that would sync address books with Google. Rather than just syncing address books, however, Cardbook is a feature-laden independent address book for Thunderbird. It integrates fully with Thunderbird, but it is accessed through a separate tab and operates independently of the regular TB address books. I like the way it presents the contact information and meets vcf standards. It also has many features such as eliminating duplicates, copying contacts between address books, finding emails linked with a given contact, and more. The only thing that I missed initially is the search function, which searches all fields. However, there is a simple way to create a temporary virtual address book by searching specific fields that provides the search functionality I am looking for. Setting up and linking to address books from many sources is easy, and you can import the existing TB address books, also.

The author is extremely responsive and diligent. I had a problem with my Google account syncing getting locked into a loop. He provided me with special versions to gather data. After some work, he tracked the issue to Google responding to sync commands in a strange way, and he created a fix for the issue in a new version. Based on my experience, I expect this add-on to be maintained and advanced regularly -- which gives me confidence to depend on it for a long time. Highly recommended!

Fantastic. To add my Google contacts, I had to:
- Open CardBook.
- Add a new address book within CardBook (via the hamburger menu).
- Select Remote.
- Select Google.
- Continue setup.
The automatic process did not work for me.
After setting this up, you have your Thunderbird address book (by default called Personal Address Book) and the new Google address book. You can click on All Contacts to see all the contacts at once. It does not sync between the existing Thunderbird address book (Personal Address Book) and the Google address book, but you have all your contacts and you can edit the Google ones within CardBook. The different address book have different colors in CardBook, so you can easily see which are which. I'm very happy with it so far.

The complement is perfect to synchronize contacs with google accounts.

Otherwise, from the two last update (2021/06/14) in edit dialog, when try to change the contact's image nothing happends. In older version works fine. If the image is in Google account imports it perfectly, and the image previosly charged are displayed.

Sincerely, congratulations to developpers team.

Cardbook has been a life saver after our previously used Google sync app didn't keep up with TBird changes. Then we ran in to a date sync issue affecting two of several devices. The developer with excellent communications and effort found a bug that was affecting a limited number of devices. CardBook and Philippe V. are The Best!

I discovered this extension when searching for a replacement solution for gContactSync (obsolete extension). CardBook is an excellent extension with great features, and well implemented. It fully replaces gContactSync, with additional features.
Thanks a lot

Finally a solution to deal with my address book needs for Google. This worked straight out of the box to sync my Google contacts with Thunderbird

Since gContactSync no longer works to sync Google contacts with Thunderbird, I was going to install CardBook but the required permissions made me decide not to. Why do they need "full, unrestricted access to Thunderbird, and your computer". Really? Why would I give them full unrestricted access to any file on my computer. I'm angry at Thunderbird for allowing this type of behavior. I used to love Thunderbird. I've used it for decades, but at the moment I hate Thunderbird, and am considering my options.

Hi

Yes, this window is frightening but this is the only way for add-ons to work as before. gContactSync had also "full, unrestricted access to Thunderbird, and your computer" but there was no popup window announcing that... that's a question of trust, all CardBook code is fully visible (here : https://gitlab.com/CardBook/CardBook/-/tree/master) is open source licenced, and trusted by almost 86000 users. So it's up to you :)

I've only used this for a couple of days; but so far I'm very impressed. A big improvement over the tried-and-true but no-longer-supported gContactSync. Very easy to use.

Most importantly, I ran into a very isolated bug when importing one of my Google address books. The author spent most of his Saturday diagnosing and solving the problem. VERY impressive support.
