There's a straightforward work around for this in Thunderbird 3.0 using keyconfig:

Very useful, particularly the shortcut key (Shift-E) that is added for compacting a folder.

That's how I use this Add-On mostly: sort through emails, mark some as deleted; review quickly to make sure, then hit Shift-E to have them gone.

Severely recommended!

This is useful, simple and needs to be added to the trunk.

An Essential if you organise your email in IMAP server based folders. Should be part of core, as I refuse to upgrade TBIRD until compactfolder is upgraded.
