I am using this awesome Gmail S/MIME extension since many years. Just install your S/Mime certificate into the Firefox Certificate Manager (Options -> Advanced -> Encryption -> View Certificates -> Your Certificates -> Import) and you are ready to send and receive encrypted messages. No need to use a standalone email program anymore...
If you are behind a proxy-server sending encrypted messages could be a problem because the add-on needs direct access to the SMTP server. But nevertheless 5-stars for the great work...
