Menu Wizard

Assegnate 5 su 5 stelle

Until now I had been using the Menu Editor add-on, and with the newer versions of Firefox authenticating add-ons, I discovered that Menu Editor has been discontinued, and I found the Menu Wizard, which I hoped would be a worthy replacement.

Well, I'm happy to say, it definitely is a worthy replacement. After installation (and removal of Menu Editor) I saw that my menus were kind of screwed up quite a bit. It took a little adjustment to use the UI, but quickly enough I was able to restore my menus to the way that I like them.

So, in general, Menu Wizard does the job quite well and I'm happy with it, but...

...just one small problem (for me, at least): I cannot delete an item permanently from a menu (the Tab Context Menu, in this case). I have some extraneous separators in some of my menus, which I think are artifacts of the Menu Editor, although I'm not absolutely certain of that. I can disable these separators so that they are not displayed, but I don't like to keep things around when I know that I'll never use them, so I wanted to clean up my menus and delete the extra separators (among other things), and that's when I discovered that I cannot delete the separators permanently. There are some other things that I want to add at least temporarily, but I'm reticent to do so because I'm not certain that I'll be able to remove them permanently if I don't want to keep them.

So for me the question is: Is it possible to delete an item from a menu?

Other than that, this is a great tool. :)

Lightning

Assegnate 1 su 5 stelle

Well, that's it. I've had it. After much investigation and use, I've come to the following conclusion: Lightning is an absolutely worthless piece of crap. Always has been, and probably always will be.

Like so many others, I experienced the MODIFICATION_FAILED error (as well as other errors) that has terrorized Lightning users. I don't know when it started happening, but it just did. After much searching on the Internet, I found this page, which suggested that updating Thunderbird and Lightning would fix the problem: http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/calendar/2011/12/lightning_11_released.html

So, since Thunderbird 9.0.1 was available (which, by the way, Thunderbird did not notify me of, even though I have automatic notifications for updates turned on; so, thank you, mozilla, for such a fine, high quality feature), I decided to update.

The result? After updating Thunderbird and Lightning, the error still occurred.

I found another web page that suggested that uninstalling and re-installing Lightning may solve the problem. So I did just that, and as a nice bonus, I didn't need to re-create my calendar. Lightning recognized my existing one (which is stored in the user's profile). Excellent, I thought. So, I tried to use my calendar with the new version of Lightning.

The result? I could no longer create events or tasks in the calendar. Oh, fine. A supposedly great product that lets you install a calendar application that doesn't let you use it. Fantastic.

So, on a whim, I uninstalled and reinstalled Lightning 1.1.1 again.

The result? I could now create events and tasks in the calendar. I could set reminders, categories, etc. Great, I thought, problem solved. So, I created a new test event with a reminder to verify that the problem was fixed.

The result? The reminder for the new event did not fire.

But, wait, there's more. In the schedule display for the day, I noticed that the even though the event was listed, there was this little indicator that showed that their was no reminder enabled. What?!? I had just set a reminder, so I opened the event and verified that indeed the reminder was set.

And yet there's still more: Not only did newly created events never have reminders enabled, even though the New/Edit Event dialog says they are, but now ALL of my EXISTING events had reminders DISABLED (permanently, apparently, since the Edit Event dialog says that reminders are enabled).

ARE YOU !@#$%$#@!*** KIDDING ME!!!!! WHO IS THE NIMROD WHO DESIGNED THIS THING?!?!

So that's it. I'm finished with Lightning. I will now search for a free calendar app, or maybe just use MS Outlook's calendar (which I'm rather loathe to do, which is why I use Thunderbird in the first place). If anyone knows of a good open-source calendar app out there, please let us all of disillusioned Lightning users know about it.

As for all of you who foolishly want to try (or to continue) to use Lightning, you've been warned.
