Thanks Rob2 - it worked for me. The hardest part was getting a new xpi file - googled it and followed the "select all files & folders, send to zip and rename to xpi". Then it worked. Yippee.

Got it to work on 60.5.0. The trick is noted below in one of the other reviews -
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Editing_an_add-on_to_change_its_compatibility
I first installed 7-zip, then used it to change the maxVersion in the install.rdf file from 14.0a1 to 99.0. Make sure to save changes. Then install the addon from the changed xpi file. This also required a restart of Thunderbird (it prompted me with a handy button).

Really missed this add-on so I tried fudging the installation file to get it to load under TBird 60 as per this mozillaZine knowledge base article
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Editing_an_add-on_to_change_its_compatibility
changing maxVersion in the install.rdf file from 14.0a1 to 99.
I first did this on a TBird 60.3.1 system and the trick worked. It installed from file without complaint and Google was now the default, everything worked perfectly. I just repeated the trick on another system under TBird 60.3.3 and, although the xpi loaded just fine, google was not added to the search engine list. Hmmm? If I can figure out why the trick no longer works I'll update this review. Meantime you can try the trick and if it works then great, otherwise you'll have to wait for the authors or someone else to fix the add-on.

Nov. 8, 2018. TB did auto update to 60.3.0 (32-bit). With this update, compatibility is enforced with this message, This add-on is not compatible with your version of Thunderbird. But now TB forces the ADD-ON TO BE DISABLED WITH NO WORK AROUND. Says to tell developer make it compatablile or it will never work.
So, will this ever work again?

Got fed up with Boing and tried the convoluted installation, and said BS, F this. Followed another reviewer's instructions, and added more to it.
Click DOWNLOAD NOW and save the .xpi file, go to TOOLS then ADD-ONS, click on the sprocket, then click INSTALL ADD-ON FROM FILE, select the .xpi file, click OPEN and INSTALL NOW, and Bob's your uncle.
Works on 52.9.1 (32-bit). Kudos to the author.

Finally! Noticed today Thunderbird did not list Google in Mozilla Search Engine (Bing and Yahoo AOL - who still uses AOL search engines?) then to go through the headache of researching and after editing Mozilla/ Firefox/Profile/ random#s and when that didn't work then found this add-on only for to it not to self install and had to do it manually...Seriously? But thank you as what would I do without Google and Thunderbird?

Just install and works. Yay!
Dirty tactics though. If Bing wasn't such a pile of junk we would use it. Microsoft is trying to own the internet as well as all the operating systems, by any means possible. Ugly stuff.

I followed the review below. Easy to do and works perfectly.

Installed manually after downloading. Had to Google (not Bing) how to do that but it's easy. Thank you.
