## What CleanMail Is For
Over time, an inbox fills up with thousands of newsletters, notifications, and promotional messages that you will never open again. Beyond the clutter, every stored message takes up disk space and slows down searching, indexing, and synchronization—both in Thunderbird and on your mail server. CleanMail helps you keep your inbox clean and lightweight: it shows you, sender by sender, who is flooding your inbox and how rarely you read their messages, then lets you clean everything up safely and even unsubscribe—for a smaller, faster, and easier-to-manage inbox. Everything is processed locally: nothing is ever sent to the developer or any third party.
Where to find it. After installation, a CleanMail button appears in Thunderbird’s main toolbar. Click it to open the CleanMail dashboard in a new tab. This dashboard is the single entry point for all the features described below. The interface language can be changed at any time using the selector in the top-right corner. Seven languages are available.

## 1. Clean Up After the Analysis
When opened, CleanMail analyzes your inbox or inboxes and builds a table where each row represents one sender, sorted by open rate. The least-read senders appear first, as they are often the best candidates for cleanup. For each sender, CleanMail displays the number of emails, the number of unread messages, your open rate, and whether the sender has been identified as a newsletter.

You can then clean up your inbox in just a few clicks:
* Filter and target. Use the search field to find a sender by name or email address, or use the account selector to restrict the display to a specific account. Filtering is instant and does not restart the analysis. Click a column header to change the sorting—for example, sort by number of emails to identify the biggest consumers of storage space first.
* Review before deleting. Click a sender’s row to expand it and display all associated emails. Hovering over an email shows a visual preview rendered inside an isolated sandbox, without running scripts or triggering tracking pixels. Each email has a checkbox, allowing you to delete every message from the sender or only a specific selection.
* Delete safely. Use the delete action for a sender, or select several senders and use the bulk action bar to delete all their emails at once. Deleted messages are always moved to the Trash folder, so the action remains fully reversible until the Trash is emptied. A counter in the header shows how many emails have already been cleaned up.
* Unsubscribe. For detected newsletters, you can select Unsubscribe or Unsubscribe and delete in a single action, preventing the sender from continuing to fill your inbox. One-click unsubscribe under RFC 8058 requires temporary network permission. CleanMail requests this permission only when you enable the Automatic Unsubscribe option. Otherwise, it falls back to opening a standard unsubscribe email or link.

## 2. Use Cleanup Rules for Automatic Maintenance
Manual cleanup is ideal for a major one-time cleanup, but to keep your inbox clean without having to think about it, use cleanup rules. Open the rules panel using the Rules button in the dashboard header.

A rule targets messages using a combination of three criteria:
* Age — older than N days, or any age.
* Sender or domain — a specific email address or an entire domain. The field provides autocomplete suggestions based on the senders found during the analysis.
* Status — read messages only, unread messages only, or both.
To create a rule, enter the required criteria and click Add Rule. Matching messages are moved to the Trash folder and can be restored. They are never permanently deleted. You remain in control of when the rules are executed:
* On demand. Click Run All Rules to immediately apply all active rules. A confirmation dialog first shows how many messages and senders will be affected. Nothing is moved without your approval.
* Automatically every day. Enable Run automatically every day, and CleanMail will apply your rules once a day in the background before displaying a summary notification. This keeps your inbox continuously clean: old notifications and previously read newsletters are automatically moved to the Trash, preventing storage usage from steadily increasing again.
A typical configuration might include one rule for read newsletters older than 30 days and another for notifications from a noisy domain older than 7 days, with automatic daily execution enabled. Configure it once, and your inbox stays lightweight.
