It may have limited downloads because it requires unrestricted access. It woul dbe great if TB/Mozilla folks would add some sort of certification or acknowledgement about such add-on so we know they can be trusted and are legit.

Exactly what I was looking for. This makes a great addition in our company security, since we now have the possibility to warn the user in a appropriate manner and we can give them action advice with a custom message. Great Addon! Especially if we look towards E-Mail as a highly attractive ransomware channel this addon is a MUST HAVE!
I do not understand why there are only a couple thousand installtions of this addon. From my perspective this could/should be part of the Thunderbird base.
Thanks a lot for your feedback!

Hervorragendes Add-On.
Super!
Installiert auf Thunderbird 102.10 unter Windows 11. Keinerlei Probleme.

Good job. Add-on version 2.2 is now fine.
It would be nice to be able to put your own "I would like to open this file anyhow" for a different language version.
Thank you for your review. With the new version, translating the Add-on got much easier and can be done with an arbitrary plain text editor like the notepad.
The translations are located here:
https://github.com/jdede/WarnAttachment/tree/master/warnattachment%40jdede.de/_locales and are currently available for German, English, French and Italian.
I would be happy if you could provide the translations for your language as a messages.json-file either via mail or as a pull request on github.
Thanks and best regards
Jens

An Update for Thunderbird 68 is highly appreciated. Especially nowadays (Ransomware etc.) this protection is very important.
This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.11).The new version supporting Thunderbird 68 just got approved by the reviewers and is now available for download.
If you are already using Thunderbird 68, the Add-On should be updated automatically.

Very good addon !
And thanks for your help :)
Dear Yaz,
thank you for your rating. I just tried to reproduce your issue on TB 60.7.0 on Linux with a fresh installation. The add-on works as expected. Can you please send me more details via Mail? Can you cross-check the list with the blocked and warned extensions with the list on github:
https://github.com/jdede/WarnAttachment
Thanks for your support.

Blocked attachments do not open, but it is possible to save them, and subsequently open separately from thunderbird. There is not enough function to completely block prohibited attachments, without the possibility of not only opening, but also of saving them.
This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.7).Hello Irshat and thanks a lot for your review.
I thought about blocking all potential malicious content but decided to focus on the open function to prevent especially unexperienced from infecting their computer by a hasty action.
Now, the user has to save the file, navigate to the corresponding directory and open the file manually.
Anyhow, I added this functionality to the todo list. If I find some time, I will try to implement that feature.

The best piece of protection against .htm and other attachments that cannot be blocked in the TB existing Filters architecture.
Suggest add in .htm to blocked option, then re-open ThunderBird to activate.
Thank you for your feedback. I added *.html and *.htm to the default attachments for warning. Should be available in the next couple of hours.

Just what i needed for my company. Tried with filters on incoming messages, but not always work. This way the attachments are blocked or the user can be warned if file is dangerous to open or not, or why the file are blocked. Extensions are configurable and also the warning messages. Very useful. Tnx
PS: I add some extensions to the warning attachments, like 7z, and some others from files from MSOffice with macros enabled.
Thank you for your feedback! The list of extension has been adapted in version 0.4:
- The MS *.???x formats were removed. They can not include macros
- The MS *.???m formats were added. They can include macros
- 7z will be added in the next update
If you have other file extensions that should be added, feel free to share them with me
