About this Add-on
Copernicus program is operational since 2014. The space segment includes the ESA developed Sentinel missions which give free access to high quality multi-sensors data for the first time. The provision of those data and added value services will stimulate the downstream sector research and development. Two Sentinel missions are already in orbit: Sentinel -1A (radar imager) has been launched the 3rd of April 2014 and Sentinel-2A (optical imager) has been launched the 23rd of June 2015. The launch of Sentinel-3A (wide field of view imager and altimeter) is actually planned for February 2016.
The Sentinel Data will be broadcasted to all the user’s communities, in Europe and in the world. At the end, it will generate 13 TB/day, nearly 5 PB a year.
The ESA ground segment generates the level one Sentinel products and broadcasts them to the Copernicus core services with guaranteed performances (http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Observing_the_Earth/Copernicus). ESA also provides hubs giving a restricted access to Member States allowing them to develop “mirror sites” in the context of collaborative ground segments. Since ESA only guarantees broadband access to Copernicus services, Member states are in charge of broadcasting the data to public users with proper performances.
The PEPS platform (Sentinel Products Exploitation Platform) broadcasts the Sentinel products at a national level in order to support environmental policies setting and enforcement, favor the industrial development and the emergence of downstream services, and meet the scientific community expectations. The PEPS project is a platform designed to offer national users increased performances access to the high volume of Sentinel data.
