Sorry if this sounds like a bug report but I couldn't find a better way and this may help someone. This didn't work with the most recent Thunderbird (it reports v3.0). Had to diddle the "install.rdf" from "3.0a1" to just "3.0" and it seems to work OK. Otherwise just what I wanted; many thanks to the developer.
