For a long time, Thunderbird has supported ignoring threads in newsgroups. This is a prototype that explores bringing that functionality to email.

How It Works
MuteThread adds Ignore Thread and Ignore Subthread menu entries to the Message menu for email messages, like Thunderbird already does for newsgroup messages.
WARNING: It's possible to lose track of email threads by inadvertently hitting "K" (the shortcut), and not notice.
To see which messages, if any, are hidden from view in a given folder, select the "View -> Threads -> Ignored Threads" menu item while in that folder. Due to a bug in current versions of Thunderbird, you'll have to exit and re-enter the folder in order for the ignored threads to re-appear.
