It works as described for me. It does require making some config edits which is a bit annoying though.

This add-on didn't work for me. Very frustrating, as this feature would be nice, but my mother will just have to suffer through crap looking emails.

I have done all this:
On order to use the add-on, turn off HTML composition (per account setting, Composition & Addressing → Composition → Compose messages in HTML format) and also make sure that "mailnews.send_plaintext_flowed" is disabled in the configuration (about:config). Furthermore, mailnews.wraplength needs to be non-zero
I get the little Line Wrap selection in the top right and it toggles off and on but I don't get any line wrapping.
I have two email accounts and both are set for HTML turned off for composition. mailnews is set to 72 and flowed false.
I have tried it on two different machines. One on TB 102.7.2 the other on TB 102.8.0
What else do I need to do?
Drop me an email, also reporting the TB version you are using, and then we can see how to debug this best.
I'm reading these reports from time to time here, but no one follow-up so far, and I cannot confirm the issue myself.

The addon only wraps the lines visually. The actual outgoing emails will still have very long lines, which is not good for plain text mailing lists.
This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.4.1).Did you "make sure that "mailnews.send_plaintext_flowed" is disabled" (see add-on description)? If so, please share more details about your setup.
Your use case is also my use case and the primary reason why I'm maintaining this.

Nope. No go for me in TB 102.6.1. Toggle button is grayed out despite following the setup instructions.
This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.4.1).I'm on the same version. Feel free to reach out via email to me for a more detailed analysis.

Worked good until last night.
I checked that the option "Enable line wrapping by default" is enabled but when I reply to a message, the icon shows "off" and I have to manually enabled by double click IN EVERY SINGLE MESSAGE I'M REPLYING TO, so this is very cumbersome.

Trivial to use, works well. Thanks a lot for porting this to Thunderbird 78+.

Finally managed to understand how to use it, together with related Thunderbird limitations.
The documentation should clearly state two things:
1) the toolbar button is grayed if you set mailnews.wraplength to zero. (Unfortunately there is no tooltip on a grayed button that suggests a possible fix. On the other hand, keeping the button enabled and bugging the user with an error message might seem too intrusive.)
2) "STRG" in description is the same as "CTRL" on English keyboards.
Thanks for the feedback. I updated the description.

Replaced Toggle Word Wrap plugin on Thunderbird 78.4.0 (64bit) nicely, and from the same developer. Good work!

I don't see this working, I have the config set up but there is no button or option.
Edit: by turning on the Composition Toolbar in the compose window I can see the button, but it's grayed out and has no effect. I still can't find the shortcut, what is STRG?
Tbird Windows 78.4.3
Note that the default shortcut was incorrectly advertised here as ALT-W, it's STRG-SHIFT-W again. Might clash with other addons, though.
The button can be added when opening the customization dialog in the compose window (right-clock on button bar).
Otherwise drop me an email, ideally already attaching some further information (TB version, error console log).

Indispensable if you sometimes need long lines of text. (Replaces the prior version called "Toggle Word Wrap")
