After upgrading to Thunderbird version 7.0, I redid George's "trick", substituting 7 (in 2.) and 7. (in 4.), and it seems to work just as well under 7.0 as under 6.0.2.
I now run Thunderbird 7.0 on Ubuntu 11.04, 64bit
