It stops working with latest Thunderbird update to version 128. It has been such an essential tool in organizing my daily life (together with Emacs org mode), please update it to work again. Thank you so much.
Hi Warren. I saw that there's a successor addon called "cb_thunderlink". Please check it out. I'm currently not planing on fixing the original ThunderLink, also based on the assumption that cb_thunderlink gets the job done.

Hope it can be worked on Updated version of TB. Because it is very useful to linking email from GTD or Cal.
Or TB should think about this function should be native to TB. Mail on Mac can do it exactly.

Thanks for updating it to TB 68!
In TB 78 I'm using https://github.com/CamielBouchier/cb_thunderlink .

It worked great until TB 60. I would love to see it working again.
Hi there! We have a new official version, working in TB 60! Enjoy

Works great on 52.9.1(stock Ubuntu 18.04 thunderbird as of 20180808) - I recognize the add-on is unsupported but it is currently working and this does enable capture of a specific message to a todo list system...good work
Extra note: if you are coming from a Mac system where Mail.app was registered for URIs of format "messageid://<$ID>" so you have a lot of them in your TODO system, you can successfully open the URIs on Ubuntu by registering a script that does this:
LINK=`echo $1 | sed -e 's/message\:\/\/\%3c/thunderlink\:\/\/messageid=/' | sed -e 's/\%3e//'`
/usr/lib/thunderbird/thunderbird -thunderlink "$LINK"

This addon is great. A bit hard to set up so that links open automatically, but once you get it working, it does the job. Especially useful for those who have outlook mail servers, which do not create unique links per email/thread. I also use it with org-mode, which makes it possible to keep links to important emails in my org file and achieve true inbox zero.
The project is open source (https://github.com/poohsen/thunderlink), so I really hope someone picks it up and makes it work with newer versions of TB.
Hi there! I picked it up, and I got link creation and usage working again on TB60 - check the releases page on the new github site. Cheers

Отличное дополнение, делающее свое дело.
Пока не появилась возможность связывать письмо с задачей, этот плагин - единственное решение для такой проблемы.
Perfect extension, which makes what it done for.
Until there are no possibility to link message with task in Lightning, this extension is the only solution.
Best regards to Christoph Zwirello!

I use thunderlink with org-mode, and being able to directly link to specific emails from my TODO entries and various notes makes my work go much faster, and makes it easy to refer to things in the past---it's enabled me to turn my notes and email into a memory extension of sorts. Only wishlist item is that it would work to put thunderlinks in Lightning, as right now there doesn't seem to be any easy way to open them from there.

Very useful, does what it advertises. Thanks to the developers (also for being very responsive in the Issues-section of their Github support page)! A little cosmetic issue in this version is the context menu integration, one could maybe hide the unused entries. But that's probably a matter of taste.

I've been looking for this kind of functionality for long! Simple and works as expected. Thank you so much!

This add-on does not work for me.
The links are created but are not recognized by any application (FF, File Explorer, THB) except command line.
However, the idea was excellent

hi. when did you send me a message?
[EDIT]
your email was in my spam folder. I'll take a look at it this weeked.

This plugin works as advertised. It creates links to individual emails. It's very useful for keeping track of emails that you need to later re-open. I run a small one man business. When customers write in with a question or request I can't immediately answer, I'll make a note in my TODO list with a ThunderLink to the customers email. Once the request is taken care of I use the ThunderLink to quickly re-open the original email and write back. It's a huge time saver. Without thunderlink I would need to search through my email history to find the relevant email.
I didn't give it five stars because there is no way to open thunderlinks in Thunderbird. There are a couple other ways to open thunderlinks. I use "Find And Run Robot" (which is another awesome time saving application).

Opens the link in .eml format, simply smart.
Just the same as if I had exported an e-mail (eml) and had then created a link to open it. This add-on avoids having to export, cleaner quicker. Great for bills, love letters, things that matter :)

What about ThunderLinks withIn Lightning Calendars? Why choose the long way when the good things are so close?
Maybe i don't get it. When Lightning is installed, ThunderLInks should be clickable within Calendars and Tasks, too.
As an important step, the current "conversion" menu option (which copies the email's body) should be overloaded by Thunderbird-Linking.
Halfway usable so far... sorry!
okay, first: ThunderLinks in Events and Tasks was not a usecase I thought of when I started, probably because of the "convert to" option. So much for the "long way".
That said, this does sound useful. And it should be doable. It won't be ready for Christmas, though, that's for sure.
second: I don't think it should go into the "convert to" submenu. After all, you don't get a converted version of the email but rather a reference to it.

Cristoph wrote:"As you can see from the plugins description, it relies heavily on the underlying OS for Firefox->Thunderbird communication."In this case, I should have mentioned the OS: Windows 7 Professional. I was thinking of using the links in Horst Shaeffer's MemPad and Calendar, from which I've already launched the default browser, which then displays the correct web-mail message, if you load the reminder (or the date) with the correct hyperlink. I was hoping to have SeaMonkey open in the same way, when these same links is activated -- assuming your utility can give me a link to paste. Sorry if this is the wrong place for this -- there is a 'tip' that we should follow a link to the 'support section' for technical assistance ... but when I do that, a page comes up without any links for this purpose.

First of all: At the end of the plugin description there is a note about what to do if you need support. Please contact me using the address provided there for further communication and don't post your questions here.
Secondly: it seems you can install the ThunderLink extension in Seamonkey (instructions below).
Right-clicking on an email will then give you the option to copy a thunderlink into the clipboard. What you then can do is open seamonkey with the -thunderlink option like that:
seamonkey -thunderlink "<the thunderlink goes here>"
This will open that single email. I'm not sure if that's enough for your usecase, but if it is then you'll have to do the following to install ThunderLink in seamonkey:
1. Download the ThunderLInk .xpi file using right-click
2. Open the file with a zip-archive reader and extract the install.rdf file
3. Add the following below the entry for thunderbird: <em:targetApplication>
<Description><!-- seamonkey -->
<em:id>{92650c4d-4b8e-4d2a-b7eb-24ecf4f6b63a}</em:id>
<em:minVersion>2.0</em:minVersion>
<em:maxVersion>2.*</em:maxVersion>
</Description>
</em:targetApplication>
4. Put the new install.rdf in the archive
5. Install the .xpi in Seamonky; restart
Please let me know if that helped. I'm afraid, though, that there's little else that can be done. The full functionality of the plugin (selecting the email in the already-open inbox view) unfortunately doesn't work with seamonkey.
[Edit]
So, I end up with three stars because my plugin didn't do what you thought it might?

I figured out how to make Firefox recognize thunderlinks on the mac. In addition to the instructions on the Mozillazine page, you have to do the following:
Create a boolean pref called network.protocol-handler.expose.thunderlink and set it to false. Then, when you click on a thunderlink in the browser (or paste a thunderlink into the address bar), Firefox will ask you to choose a program to associate with this protocol. Navigate to /Applications/Thunderbird.app and click to the checkbox to remember this choice, and you're set.
Now clicking on a thunderlink will bring up Thunderbird. The only issue is that it doesn't bring up the right email in Thunderbird. That's probably because I am using ver 11.01. I am looking forward to the Thunderlink update that will make it work in Thunderbird 11. I hope this fix helps anyone who was having the same frustration as I was on the mac.
hi,
I had a chance to look at your issue, but it doesn't look good.
Regarding your solution: I'm afraid it's a dead end. We need a way to pass the actual ThunderLink to TB, but Firefox does not provide a means to do that. This has to be done by the underlying OS, and it works fine on Windows and Linux. There is definitely also a way to do that on OSX but I didn't fully implement it because I ran into a bigger problem on the way:
Basically, the problem ist that OSX doesn't seem to allow more than one instance of TB to be launched. So, when TB is up and running, launching it again from the command line with the -thunderlink option will result in an error message, whereas on Windows and Linux machines, the option would be passed on to the running instance where it would subsequently be used to select the email referenced by the ThunderLink.
If I observed things correctly, you should get the error message, too, when you use the way you described above to call TB. Just do it twice in a row.
I will post this problem on mozillazine. Maybe there is some workaround, but seems to me like an OS limitation/feature that we won't be able to circumvent. Sorry.
regards,
poohsen

Would be nice if TB could recognize (make clickable) thunderlinks in emails I get from google calendar where I put these thunderlinks.

Wonderful! I've been wanting to be able to do exactly this for years. Great adjunct to a task management tool such as the one I use, Toodledo (http://toodledo.com).
See my related Toodledo improvement request, http://www.toodledo.com/forums/thread.php?fid=2;tid=12422.
Thank you so much.
Cheers,
Ian

After installing the add-on in Thunderbird and restarting Thunderbird, copy the lines below into a file called thunderlink.reg. Right click the file and select "Merge".
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\thunderlink]
@="URL:thunderlink Protocol"
"URL Protocol"=""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\thunderlink\shell]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\thunderlink\shell\open]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\thunderlink\shell\open\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Mozilla Thunderbird\\thunderbird.exe\" -thunderlink \"%1\""
Hi Chad, thanks for the comment. I wanted to include this info a while ago but eventually forgot to. Getting the argument and the quotation marks right could be tricky for inexperienced users, though, so it's good you posted it. I've taken the liberty of copying the script into the addon description.Regards,Chris
Edit: Just saw that I had already listed the .reg in the description for ThunderLinkSpotter. It's good to have it here too, though.
Btw: what's still missing in the addon for you to give it 5 stars?
