I am a basic user. Simple email, calendar and contacts.

I was using Provider and am now trying out CALDAV.

Can anyone, briefly, explain the pros and cons?

Again, during the short period I've been using up until the recent issues i'd been quite satisfied. I've seen others discuss a CALDAV alternative. What are the pros and cons?

I had used this add-on for 2 or 3 weeks before it just stopped working.

I was happy with performance, but is it typically this unstable?

I can't use a calendar system that isn't near 100% reliable.

I'll be happy to contribute if/when it works again and for more than 2 or 3 weeks.
