@PebbleChamp
That's only true for Thunderbird versions before 3. There was a bug that previously prevented the messages from being sorted properly even after changing the setting you point out:
http://micropipes.com/blog/2008/10/22/threadbubble-going-the-way-of-the-dodo/
It's a shame to give someone's work 1 star without checking into the situation, it was a bug that lasted nearly 4 years and his addon was very useful for people for a long time because of this.

couldn't reproduce PebbleChamp's idea, his way didn't work for me. ThreadBubble, however, does the job!

Umm, this add-on is not necessary. Thunderbird already has the capability of doing this w/o the add-on. All you have to do is go to: Tools->Options->Advanced->Config Editor, and then change the value of mailnews.thread_pane_column_unthreads to FALSE.

A great extension, but missing Gmail's Killer Feature: threading with replies. For those looking for Gmail-style threading, vote for this bug:

@elPhilosoFee: Is this what you were looking for?

I'd like the "upside down" gmail also, newest message at the top of thread. (Or at least this as an add-on option)
In my dream world, messages from a "Sent" folder would also be in the thread bubble (like gmail!), but the developer never claimed to have this functionality. Cheers!

It works fine, but there is a bug. When a new mail arrived, the Inbox will have a "star" icon to notify that there are new emails in this folder. But when I click on the email, the "star" still exists in the folder, since all the emails are readed.

Thanks, it works great!
The bug in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=262319 is fixed. But it is still exist in TB2.0.0.19. Maybe, it will be fixed in TB3.

I agree with kiwichick : The best would be that the lastest messages appear at top and not at bottom , like in the general default sort order .
So the latest can be displayed without opening all the thread .
In outlook (i used at work ) it works like this (best) way .

Thank you very much.
Talking about threads, do you know something which could join two threads, or split one thread in two ? (sometimes thunderbird don't sort really how I would want...)

There is an undocumented requirement that I stumbled across before this worked properly for me: you must set View | Sort By... | Date.
I initially had TB set to sort by a different method (Order Received), and this extension did absolutely nothing in that case.
If I had to guess I'd say you weren't sorting properly. Make sure you are sorted like the screenshot shows: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/images/p/24649/1218576692
Edit: The requirement is intentional and documented. From the support page, http://www.micropipes.com/code/threadbubble/ :
The extension checks to make sure you are sorting by date before it does anything (to keep from messing up your view if you temporarily sorted by another column). If nothing happens after you install, that's the first thing to check.

Thanks a lot! This is how Thunderbird should sort threads by default. Seems there's a few minor bugs to squash (that's why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5).

The extension does what it promises, and does it nicely.
However, it has a nasty side effect (at least with me). I use multiple accounts and as such have multiple inboxes, sent folders etc. Only one of them is threaded, the rest is just sorted by date and some are then grouped by sort.
But after installing this extension all my folders become threaded. I can switch them back to unthreaded or grouped by sort, but after I receive another e-mail for that folder, threadbubble forces it back to a nicely sorted threaded view.
(ThreadBubble 0.6 with Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 on Windows XP SP2)
Update: Followed the advice to disable all other extensions. Unfortunately this had no effect. ThreadBubble still keeps threading inboxes that should not be threaded. I think it appears only to happen when you receive an e-mail for the folder you're currently viewing.
Hi Frank, I have several folders and accounts and ThreadBubble only affects one of my inboxs (the threaded one). I'd suggest disabling any other extensions you have and trying again. No one else has reported this problem (which also makes me think it's another extension doing it) but if other people see this please let me know. Thanks.
I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 on Linux (don't have XP to test it specifically).

Want to give it five, but need to stop four really want to give a 4.9. Here's why.
If I start an email thread with my brother w/subject "whats up?", then weeks later someone sends me an email w subject "whats up?" they get grouped in same thread, even though the two senders were never sending/recieving the same email string. Aside from that, perfect
Thanks for the review. The problem you're describing is actually a problem with Thunderbird. All this extension is doing is asking Thunderbird to resort the emails - it doesn't actually do any of the sorting itself.

I'm a pretty heavy user of gmail for personal email, and have just switched from outlook to thunderbird for work email - mainly because of outlooks terrible support for threaded conversations. Once in thunderbird I kept 'losing' new messages to old conversations as they'd appear miles down the page, sometimes weeks back. This extension makes it work much better - i.e. much more like the perfection that is gmail. Thank you!

Good but the bad part is I cannot see the new messages any more in the top. Does not matter I am not going to remove this utility from my thunderbird until I find a better one.

Excellent work. In my humble opinion it should be incorporated in TB3. Saves a lot of time.
GOOD JOB!

So simple I thought it wasn't even there!
It has been a constant irritation that new messages with the same subject header get lost yards up Thunderbird's message list, when sorted by "threaded" in view/sorted by.
This little add-on ensures you see new additions with old subject headers.
Well done!

It seems I can't actually post a new review, only edit the previous one so I hope this actually gets read.
Yes, Developer, you are correct that in Gmail the messages themselves don't change position and this is as it should be but the latest date received is sent to the top. Does this make more sense?
You're not missing anything - that's by design. When a new message arrives this extension will bubble the entire thread to the top of your inbox, but the thread itself will remain in the order the messages were received (with the newest at the bottom). I've never seen a threaded view operate differently (gmail does the same thing). Thanks for the feedback though. :)

Not quite as fluid as the Gmail interface, but works, definitely.

I always have to run through my entire inbox to find older threads that have just been revived. Well, not anymore! Thanks, you are my hero. :)
