It does its job, although it fails to recognise legitimate words a little bit too often. Still an extremely useful and well-made product.

Works for me - better than all those wiggly red lines every time I DON'T spell the American way!

does the job just fine...

The first extension I download on a vanilla Firefox install. Though I'd better vote as it only has 3 stars..

Great, but annoying that it lacks basic words such as movies and other words in normal dictionaries.

I hope this is marked compatible soon with beta9pre, but until then:
Please create a boolean preference named extensions.checkCompatibility.4.0b and set it to false.

Works great in the Firefox Betas now that it has been updated (and always did work if you installed the Addon Compatibility Checker addon).

Well am unsure what all the negative reviews are about. all i did was install the add on, FF asked to restart and will remember my web pages that where open, i clicked yes and all is done. no changing code, or any other hassles. in fact as i write this it is checking my spelling.
works a treat for me, thanks for those that have made it :)

To get it working on firefox 4 b8 pre (or earlier) follow these instructions:
1 - download the addon rather than install (right click and select save as).
2 - unzip the contents to a temporary folder.
3 - open file install.rdf with notepad
4 - replace the contents with the text at the bottom of this post
5 - save the file
6 - rezip the contents
7 - go to firefox and select to install from file (change the browse contents to all files) and select the zip file.
8 - follow the normal install method and it should install as per usual. The GB dictionary option should appear with the US one in the usual way.
The adjustments in code were minimal. Just the version numbers for firefox/minefield and a tweak in the unpack code. I cant edit this add-on as its not mine.

I can't get it to work in 4.0b7. I've tried the uninstall/reinstall/sacrifice chicken a good many times to no avail :(

If firefox doesn't accept this dictionary, remove it and install it a few times until it takes it.
Very strange but it works eventually.

After updating FF, the BE Spellchecker reported back that it was not compatible with this version (3.6.12). I uninstalled it and re-installed it. After re-installation, it no longer said it was not compatible but still would not work. Are there any other British English dictionaries? There are a number of American ones but this was the only British version.

Why does it call for Key Scrambler Set Up to download/run it? How can I avoid this?

Does not work in FF 4.0 Beta 7 although it claims to.

Not working on FF4b7 - it seems to install but does not function. No language options in the right click menu, no spell checking.
Check the US version and that is fine. British one just won't work at all.

Excellent dictionary, I can find no fault with it at all, thank you!

Great add-on - very helpful.
Also @TheGorgeousKate
Not only is "meter" perfectly acceptable in UK spelling, so is "program" (but only in the context of a "computer program" - if you are talking about a "programme of work" or a "television programme" then yes, there is a Transatlantic divide!)

@ The Gorgeous Kate
meter is a perfectly acceptable British English word. It is a measuring device.

One of my favoUrite hates is the behavioUr of the spell checker for us Brits.
This addon is still excellent despite the lack of any apparent updates (although it probably needs a little work regarding the installer to bring it up to date perhaps)
British English Dictionary still works even in FireFox 4 (works for 3.6.x too), but the following incantations are required.
* Install Add-on Compatibility Reporter 0.7 https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/15003/
* Use the install link from these pages and choose "install anyway" when prompted that it is not compatible.
* Restart FF and go to Add-on Manager and enable the dictionary if not already and restart again if required.
There does not appear to be an option to set the spell checker language in FF 4 from the options menu, but it can be done from the context menu while in a form.
* Type behaviour, colour or any other British spelling or miss-spelling in a text field on a web page
* Right click the red squiggly underlined miss-spelling
* Choose languages and set "English/United Kingdom"
I have been successful using the above steps for Windows XP/Vista/7. If this also works for you, then please use the add-on compatibility tool to mark it as "This add-on still works" so perhaps it will get white-listed by the devs.
