Does what it says and does it well. For those wanting UK English but it keeps defaulting back to US English, perhaps you should have chosen UK English when installing Firefox but anyway all you need to do is go into Tools/Options/Content Tab/Languages/Choose/Language in order of preference: English/United Kingdom [en-gb] remove the US English if you wish, otherwise make sure UK English is the default then click OK.

Installed this but it kept going back to US English.
So I went into Applications, right clicked to open package, found the Dictionaries and deleted both US ones.
Voila! I got my British English spelling back.
In your face Firefox bug!
Giving the app 2 stars as I should not have had to work that out in order to use it!

I followed these instructions:-
To enable, right-click in a multi-line text box, select "Languages", then "English / United Kingdom"
It then switches to English (UK) for my message, BUT next time I type it's reverted to English (US)
Really annoying! I'm on FF v9.0 in Win7 64-bit

This dictionary is misleading, it is called "British English Dictionary" and yet is filled with American English spellings of many words! What is the point of this? My U key is offended by this so-called dictionary...

Seems I was not using this dictionary at all. My previous comments related to Quick Translator. Nonetheless I am not sure if the authors of BED should be pleased or not because I have it installed but it does even less that translate English into English... Also I searched for BED to re-install it but Thunderbird could not find it... and neither can I. I am just going to give up, stand in a corner and shower the neighbourhood with profanity.

Good, although the word list has to be updated.
Not recognized words: anymore, gonna, movie, pegasus, teleporting, traveling.
(I assume you take all valid words and exclude American spelling).

I have had to disable this add-on with Firefox 8 as FF crashes and will not open

I like this add-on since it does spell-check using English (as opposed to American). Unfortunately, it is not comprehensive, and is missing some basic words. I've been irritated by this a few times, but when it squiggly-underlined "movie" and "movies", that really annoyed me. Really? You reckon "movie" is not an English word?

It's ridiculously hard to select this dictionary. The default dictionary should be in Tools -> Options, and I'm sure it used to be. Aside from that, since we now have to load this as a plug-in and not just as s dictionary, the package should offer to set this as the default dictionary.

As mentioned already, this add on is presented as a British English dictionary, but its default setting is American English.
It's hard to know what's going on in the developer's mind to continue to allow this misrepresentation - so he can have a couple of stars instead of 5. Unreasonable behaviour deserves an unreasonable response.

I can't remember when I first started using this but have never had any problems. I use it in Thunderbird and Firefox
Came to this page to add it again after an uninstall and reinstall of Firefox.
I was surprised to see a reviewer say it didn't recognise 'colour'. It does, as well as 'centre' and other British English words, but you have to select the language/dictionary to be used when you install the addon. (right click context menu), as stated by a reviewer about 5 or 6 reviews down. After that it works fine.

I've never been able to make this add-on work. I recently upgraded my system and browser and thought I would try again with the latest version of the dictionary. (I'm running Mac OS 10.5.8, Firefox 7.0.1) - but still nothing. I tried alt-click in a text box (alt-click being the Mac equivalent of right-click) but nothing at all. Is this add-on even supposed to work with Macs I wonder?

I've just installed this 'British' dictionary, and I've already found issues with it. I tested it with a few words to see if it worked, and one of the words I tested was COLOUR. It tells me that the correct spelling should be COLOR. We British spell the word COLOUR, not COLOR.
How is this a British Dictionary?
"colour" really is in the dictionary. Have you installed it correctly?

As it says on the can "British English". Also known as "Proper English".
As English is meant to be!
Works great.

This add-on should change its name to avoid confusing users, it should be something like "UK-English spell checking for Firefox"

An excellent add on, no more American English spell checking for me, Once you have installed this add on you also have to set it as the default language, to do this, on a web page with a text box, like a forum or similar, type enough text to activate the spell checker, then right click in the box and choose 'language' and select your preferred one in the list of installed ones.

@Meg you should have the same option/method in your email client, but you will have to start typing out an email before you can change to a preferred language it doesn't have an option in the menus, which is where we all look first.....

Can someone help me please, I have downloaded the British UK dictionary into my Thunderbird messages which is in French because I live in France. It was downloaded successfully, my computer tells me it is in Thunderbird but if I go into the Options, Language it is not there and I don't know how to find it. In my downloads it doesn't open for installation because it must be already installed although I haven't actually gone through the normal installation wizard because it isn't there. Sorry, total novice really just wanted the choice of a second dictionary in my own language as I often use both when sending messages.
