Works fine with my environment (Windows x64) and import of *.vcs files. Maybe not too intuitive to use, as you have to search for Thunderbird Menu -> Events and Tasks -> Import... and switch the file filter in the pop up window to import a *.vcs file.

Great Idea. Doesn't work. Come on. Get off y'botty and rewrite this shit so that it does what you claim it does... but at the moment doesn't.

Not working for me either. It says there are no events to be exported. The calendar is fully populated. I have read the developer's suggestions for the earlier versions, but none of the suggestions work. Help.
This will earn donation and 5 stars if this every works again. The ability to export by date is so important.

I have Windows XP. I have Thunderbird 3.1.7, I just added Lightening, then added this vcs addon. I deleted the two default calendars that Lightening came with (think they were labeled "Home" and something else), I created a new calendar called "Work". I associated vcs files to Thunderbird (was originally with Outlook), I double click vcs files and nothing happens. I also go to "Events and Tasks" -> Import and select the vcs this way, still nothing. No errors and no events crated. Please correct this.

This add-on does indeed address VCS import, and as others note, that's important for interoperablility with platforms like Palm OS. However, VCS export only directly operates on the entire calendar. Nonetheless, I discovered a workaround:
1) Highlight the event in the "Events List" (Events and Tasks / Find Events)
2) Right click and "Copy"
3) Open up a Notepad window
4) Paste - the Notepad now contains the event in VCS format
5) Save As, with a .vcs extension.
At this point you can attach the .vcs file to an email, or drag and drop into the Palm Desktop

I installed the plug in in Thunderbird. My aim was to include vcs invitation automatically to the agenda lightning but it fails. I was obliged to save the vcs to my temp directory and import it afterwards in to the agenda.
I would like that this will be automatic without having to save it on hard drive

Has a problem with importing - doesn't seem like it supports charsets - characters like ø end up as "ø" - big bug.

I have a couple of tips to share with anyone using who wants to use this plugin to get their calender on to a palmos device. First let me be clear that this is a one way capability as far I can see.
To export the calender in a valid format for the palm desktop, you must specify "separate items for each occurrence" in the plugin options, and provide a date range. Otherwise the desktop import returns an error.
When the calendar is imported to the palm desktop duplicates will be created. I have been deleting the palm desktop calendar manually prior to importing my latest vcs export in order to eliminate duplicates. I have tried some palm duplicate record deleters, with no luck.
The primary objective for me is to get my calendar from lightning to my treo. Importing the vcs file to palm desktop (v6.2.2) ultimately allows me to sync the events to my phone. It is far from ideal, but is the only way I have found to get my calendar events from tbird/lightning to my treo. Hats off to teester for making this possible!

Terrific addon. This gives me the ability to sync my palm calendar with TB 3.0 and lightening. While not ideal at least it is workable. Thank you Teester!

Eport of full calendar seems to work. Working with ranges has problems. Eg. 12 month back and 4 years in the future. --> nothing

Basically this plugin would be very useful if it worked as defined and as expected.
It seems to be coded in haste and still contains many uncorrected bugs. It would be nice if the developer first finished the coding properly, following all relevant standards, and only after then posted the plugin to the web.
1) When exporting to UTF-8, each field contains encoding specification "ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:", which is right, but the necessary second half of the information ";CHARSET=UTF-8" is always absent. The target device then uses its default, which is one of the Latin-1 charsets for most devices and hence it is imported with errors.
2) The plugin correctly translates into UTF-8 and encodes in quoted printable the calendar event data. But it does not do the same with categories - they are in ANSI charset and unencoded, hence the whole export file is not usable.
3) The category header reads CATAGORIES:, which is, of course, not recognized by standards-compliant receivers.
These are just three that I could find.

Félicitations, après correction "Tools > Options > Advanced > Config editor and type vcs into the filter box of the window that pops up. Check that extensions.vcssupport.export_events and extensions.vcssupport.export_tasks are both true"

Teester, thanks for this very useful add-on. I have several programs using vcs rather than ics and you've made it easy to sync the data across them all.

Perfect, just what I needed. I'm running Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 with Lightning 0.8 on Windows XP Home SP2.
A web seminar was trying to be convenient and offered an "add to calendar" feature, which was only convenient if I could access the .vcs file. T
Thanks to you, I could, which is good because I got my dates mixed up and the seminar is today! lol. Big thanks.
I look for this to become a regular part of sunbird/lightning. I agree that bliss and perfection would be preclude the necessity to manually download/import...but that's minor in my view. It's easy to use, easy to install, does what it's supposed to do. yay.

installed easily and imported the vcs as promised. You do have to import the vcs via the import calendar function so it is a bit tedious but still is a great addition. thanks for developing it!

I downloaded a .vcs file using Firefox and saved it on my desktop in Linux (Ubuntu 7.10).
I opened the file using double-click then selected Thunderbird to open the file. This did not succeed.
This plugin would be greatly improved if the necessary file associations with Thunderbird could be added.
In any case, it's great to be able to import these .vcs files now (it's done explicitly using the 'Import calendar' menu, BTW).
Thanks!
JP

I tested ".vcs Support" version 0.4.1 with Mozilla Sunbird 0.5 on Windows XP SP2 and on openSUSE 10.2 Linux.
This extension fills an important gap in Sunbird and Lightning, providing full support to vCalendar format (.vcs files).
The user interface is very simple and intuitive, and supports language localization.
I was able to install the extension without problems.
The extension can export almost all the properties of an event, plus some internals fields, not visible in the user interface.
Only priority and URL fields are not exported (I don't know if they are part of vCalendar standard or not).
Date and time fields are exported in local time (not UTC time).
I tested the export feature, trying to export three different calendars to vCalendar format and importing them into the Calendar of Microsoft Works 7.0 on Windows XP, and into Kontact 1.2.3 (KOrganizer 3.5.5 module) on openSUSE 10.2 Linux.
One of these calenders was a test calendar designed to test all the properties of an event.
The import into the Calendar of Microsoft Works worked pretty well, with some issues related to alarms (they are set 1 hour more) and recurrent events (recurrence information is ignored, if you choose to export recurrent events as single events).
On openSUSE Linux, the extension has a user interface bug with the Italian version of Sunbird (the export calendar dialog does not contain any calendar), but works fine with the English version of Sunbird.
The import into Kontact worked pretty well, with some issues related to all day events (that are not imported) and alarms (events are imported, but the alarm part is ignored).
The extension has been constantly improved since version 0.1, and the author has proved to be responsive on notifications of bugs.
All tests were done on a clean Sunbird profile.
All operating systems and software are in Italian language.
I've addressed some of the issues in version 0.5.1. Dates and times are now exported as UTC time. The bug with openSUSE was also fixed with 0.5. (I have no idea what caused it)
All day events still are a bit of a problem as they are not really defined in the official vCalendar specs, so everyone seems to handle them differently.
