Great add-on and a must have - I just wish everyone would use a spell checker!
FIREFOX BUG:
Firefox keeps changing the default language, for example: English (UK) back to English (US). As explained previously, this is a Firefox and Thunderbird bug. This bug has been around for years - planet America strikes again I'm afraid!
New Mail Attention
Assegnate 5 su 5 stelle
This new mail Add-on actually works and is the only one that does 100% of the time, and that includes Thunderbird's own notifications have never worked properly. It would be an even better add-on if it had pop-up and sound options, here's hoping.
Mailbox Alert
Assegnate 3 su 5 stelle
Anyone who's ever used Thunderbird knows about the problems with mail notifications not working properly, which is a bug that has been around for donkey's years and looks like it will never be fixed. I've tried all the other "fixes" including altering the condstore and mail.imap.use_status_for_biff settings using the config editor, but they never worked either.
When I came across this little add-on my hopes were raised, but sadly I spent ages trying to get it to work properly with Thunderbird 31.5.0, but I couldn't. It's very sporadic and not much better than Thunderbird's own effort. The test settings seem to work, but that's about it. It also looks like this add-on is not the developers highest priority either; I don't expect things to improve in the future so I will probably have to uninstall it, pity.
There are a couple of other new mail notification add-ons but the best one I've found is called: "New Mail Attention" and that seems to work perfectly. It's a bit basic and doesn't have any sound or pop-up options, it just flashes and highlights the Thunderbird taskbar shortcut, but at least it does work 100% of the time. The obvious question is after all these years, is why doesn't Thunderbird's own mail notifications work properly; it's a very important and basic function for any mail program? Maybe the Thunderbird developers should have a chat with Giovanni Coriasco.
Download Status Bar

I've been using 'Download Status Bar' for years and it has just got better and more refined since I first started using it. It gives you a lot more information and options when downloading files - it's one of my all time favourites.

I don't know what the future holds for Thunderbird but this is an excellent add-on which fixes the annoying Draft auto-save bug, which has been around for years!

Yet Another Buggy Release!
Lightning is okay when it works but it's always been very buggy. The main problem is the most basic one - connecting and syncing with Google calender? Another major problem is that it doesn't notify you when it can't connect and sync, which can result in you missing appointments, arrgh! Never, ever, rely on Lightning as your main calendar; always check your phone or log-on to Google, which kind of negates this app really. I have just installed version 17 of Thunderbird and of course, true to form, Lightning has stopped working (again). Thunderbird is having problems connecting as well? I only got Lightning working by installing the 'Provider for Google Calendar' add-on which someone mentioned. I don't know why Lightning needs this add-on to work but for some reason it fixed the problem this time around; I've never had to use that add-on before, I just waited until Mozilla eventually fixed it. Does anyone at Mozilla actually use their own apps? I can't believe they release buggy applications like these, its getting really annoying. I'm thinking of looking elsewhere for a calendar and email client because of the constant bugs which should be removed before any release.
REPLY TO: Philipp Kewisch (Developer)
So, judging from your reply it's Mozilla that's at fault. If there's an upgrade, Mozilla don't inform the developers and the add-ons don't get updated in time - what a system! And as long as that system is in place it will continue to happen, resulting in more frustration for the end user. Users aren't interested in the politics of it all they just want software that works and Thunderbird - and consequently Lightning - is simple not reliable enough for everyday use. Years ago I used Outlook and had no problems, it just worked, but the cost was prohibitive. So being a long time Firefox user I thought I would change to Thunderbird and at first I was very pleased but then I came across bugs which never get fixed and are ignored. For instance, highlight your Inbox and your faced with a blank message pane, it doesn't show your first email which I thought would be logical. You have to click on an email for it to show up in the message pane so you can read it. Is that supposed to happen? It's been like that for years! The new Menu Button which is now shown by default, has disappeared? I've installed Windows Live Mail and have been using it for the last couple of days. The mail client is slick, it works perfectly and looks like just like Outlook. Also, if there are any connection problems with mail or calendar you can click on the status bar and an info box pops up with the all the details. You're not left looking at an very small triangle which can be easily missed and gives you next to no information. It's not perfect, because although you can connect to your Google calendar it's read only. Hopefully this will change in the future but for now I'll just login if I need to change anything, I'll also look around for any another options because I've had it with Thunderbird.
Year view
Assegnate 2 su 5 stelle
Year View is unbelievably slow and has always has been for some reason? When you click on the Year View tab it will take forever to load up all your calendar entries resulting in you unable to use Thunderbird until it completes. You sit there being mesmerised by the little spinning wheel! Why this happens is a mystery which 'fabrix' has never been able to fix.
The logical option is to disable the loading up of calendar entries and just use it as a quick way to look up future dates. It's nice to have a year view; but the UI is so crowded when it loads up entries it's not really much use anyway. Having an option to disable some or all of your calendar entries would be a great addition. As it is, it's unusable and I've had to disable it.
I will try and use it again in the future and see if it's fixed or a disable calendar entries option has been implemented, because, as I said, it's a good idea, and I appreciate the effort, but I won't hold my breath.
UPDATE:
Fabrix, if you have no time to develop this any more can't you release a version that doesn't load up the calendar entries so you will just have a nice clean year view?
Regards.
Lightning

I'm using Lightning 1.0 beta5 which is very buggy and so was the previous version. Lightning locks your calendars randomly which results in you losing your data, you have to remember to copy your data to the clipboard just in case this happens! When it does you have to restart Thunderbird and then right click on the locked calendar to unlock it. Pop-up reminders won't dismiss properly and stay on the screen when you change the reminder time and save the event for later. It needs a lot of work to make it stable, good idea though.
UPDATE:
Just happened again! Got the dreaded Lightning error box: "An error occurred when writing to the calendar Lightning!" > Details... Error code: MODIFICATION_FAILED, Description: <empty>.
Lost my data again! Checked the website and this bug, or similar bugs, have been around for years - still not fixed?!?
Speed Dial
Assegnate 1 su 5 stelle
I have used this app for a number of years now and through a number of versions and updates. I really like the idea of an Opera style speed dial add-on set as your home page but sadly this app has always been full of bugs. Long standing problems are: creating/deleting tabs, moving/deleting dials and running scripts. It will eventually cause problems with Firefox, which will start running slow, will go into endless loops and then crash.
I would install this add-on and at first things seamed okay, no problems, but, once your tab/dial count goes above a certain count the problems seem to start. I would get script error messages and things would then get progressively worst. It took a lot of frustration and wasted hours trying to track down my 'computer problems' to this add-on. If you have problems with Firefox freezing or crashing and you use this add-on, try disabling it or as I have done, totally remove it and see if Firefox and your computer runs better.
I now keep things simple and use 'MyBookmarks' as my home page, no dial previews but I can live with that. I have also tweaked my Firefox HTTP browser settings and set them to 'optimized' using 'Fasterfox Lite' which seems to speed things up a little - at last I now have a stable and quick browser!
