Not working anymore! :-(

Assegnate 1 su 5 stelle

This used to be one of my favourite add-ons. Unfortunately, it hasn't worked at all since at least TB5, and the author appears to have abandoned it -- my recent pleas to him to fix the problem have gone unanswered.

I've delayed upgrading from TB 3.1.16, holding out the faint hope that Country Lookup would get fixed, but it's obvious to me now that this simply isn't going to happen. And I have no experience at all writing TB add-ons myself, nor do I have the time right now to climb a steep learning curve in order to try to fix the problem myself, and it doesn't appear that anyone else out there has the required expertise, time, or interest either.

The "MailHops" add-on (suggested by someone else as a possible replacement) has issues of its own, but at least there seems to be some hope of getting those problems addressed -- unlike Country Lookup, which sadly appears to be gone for good.

I was awed with this one! It does not work with Thunderbird 8. Can't WAIT until it is upgraded! Would be HAPPY to contribute for it! You GO, Frederik!

This addon may help, waiting to Country LookUp to be adjusted for TB 6

Super Teil, aber nun sollte es auch im 5er gehen.

Super thing but now make an update for real Time.

This add-on does exactly what it says it will do.

Gives you (along with much more) a flag telling you the country of the IP address. And of course, if the sender's e-mail provider is Hotmail.com the flag produced will be a Stars and strips. What do you expect?

Where this is particularly useful is when you get an e-mail purporting to come from ypur bank and the flag generated is from the Dominican Republic. A good indicator it is a scam.

Other curiosities like the flag produced tells you that "The Independent" newspaper in the UK uses an internet service provider in the Netherlands.

Anyone complaining that the country identified is not identical with the residence of the sender is incredibly naive. How else, other than the ISP address do you think this add-on can find a location?

Great Add-on! Hope you will update for TB 5.

Doesn't work with TB 5, so an update is needed.

What I found with TB 3.1 is that it often gives the WRONG country, which is deceiving!

This is a great add-on. It does the most that is possible. People need to understand that for some messages (like ones sent using Gmail's web site), it is not possible to show the country of the original sender. This is not something wrong with this add-on. It shows the country as accurately as possible by looking at the mail headers. Thank you!

Most disappointing. I uninstalled it the same day.

The comment from 2006 is still valid - I thought that it would have been overcome by now.

Most of my Canadian friends apparently live in USA!!

The ISP is not a valid indicator for most addresses, especially Yahoo so this program disappoints.

I am not sure whether this belongs to the Country Lookup or to Mnenhy, but there should be somewhere in the options a checkbox to show the flag in the Brief headers. Then I would Really love it.

This utility doesn't lookup the original sender's location, only the mail server's country.

For example (real example) - you receive email from typical Nigerian scam artist saying how rich he is and he needs your help to recover his money, blah, blah, blah.

This addon shows that his email address (in this case a yahoo.com address) is in the US. Of course yahoo.com is in the US ... it doesn't show the 'origin' of the sender in Africa like it claims to do though.

In this particular example you still need to lookup the final 'received from' field in the header for the originating IP (for this example it is 196.207.9.59, which is the actual sender's IP and that resolves to Nigeria - see here: loookup.com/196.207.9.59 - not a typo, 3 o's).

I am no coder so I have no idea how difficult it would be to implement actually looking up the country of 'origin' rather than the mx server's country.

3 stars because it is "nifty", -2 stars because it looks up the wrong information every time.

Hi,

Country Lookup normally uses the "from" value in the first Received header that contains such a value. So it should actually lookup the sender instead of the server. Could you maybe copy the headers of the mail that didn't work? If it doesn't work for multiple mails, maybe there is a mistake in the algorithm.

Thanks,
Frederik

Extension works fine with Mnenhy when you strip the display message header to a minimum in View -> Headers -> Extended Normal Headers. Then go to Customize and kill all unnecessary headers.
One problem remains though: When forwarding a message you still get a full message header with zillions of unneeded fields. That is a pain and should be configurable. It is probably a Mnenhy problem, but that also affects the use of this extension

I'm very interested on the mail origins, also for working with mail systems, so I really appreciate this extension, also because it bases its analisys on server's IPs. I think I'm one of the first who installed it ;)

I like the idea... but...

It only displays when viewing all headers. I guess this is useful if I'm actually trying to diagnose the origin of the message, but when I'm determined to find the origin, I don't mind looking up an IP elsewhere.

It would be cool if the flag displayed in the normal header view similar to the "display mail user agent" extension.

I confirm: 2.0.0 doesn't show the flag unless the header is showing all. Remarkably tho, if you click where the flag *would* go, then the screen with the Yahoo map shows up, displaying the 0°/0° off the african coast...

I can only see the icon if I "view all headers"...which takes up the entire viewing area usually.

I found out that country lookup will work under TB 2.0, IF you use enigmail 94.3 AND NOT .95
Try it
