I find it works great with the default file setting. I'm wondering about the whole pulldown with http etc options. Does this mean I can upload the file to a web server and share it with other users? That would be perfect for our context - a bunch of librarians sharing canned responses to common "virtual reference" service questions. Is there any documentation about this?
Hi,
As you assumed the http and https options provide a means to share the contents xml file among a group of people across a network. It's a simple as copying the xml file to a web server and the just pointing to that file.
The way I used the extension in our support center was to have a "master" server on which any shortcut changes would need to be made. On the master server no changes were made to the defaults. We then installed apache on the master server to serve up the shortcut xml file. On all the clients we pointed to the apache server using the http option in the textcomplete settings. What you type into the XML URL field then looks something like: myserver.com/public/txcpl.xml with the drop down set to http://
The only downside to this setup is that only the person on the master server can make changes to the shortcuts, this could of course also be the upside. ;)
We also experimented with setting the XML File Path on the clients to a windows network share this also allows the clients update the
shortcut xml settings. However this is very flaky and not really recommended.
cheers
marcel
